Choosing a Ford pickup

Ford sells four pickup families in Canada, and the right one depends mostly on what you tow and how often.

Towing figures are maximums for properly equipped trucks. The rating for any specific truck depends on its engine, axle ratio, cab, bed and tow package, so check the sticker or door-jamb label before you hitch up.

Which Ford is right for you?

What's new and what's gone at Ford Canada

• Gone: the Escape compact SUV, including its hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, ended production in December 2025. The Edge and Transit Connect are also no longer on Ford Canada's lineup.
• Paused: the electric F-150 Lightning was discontinued in December 2025. Ford has said it will return as an extended-range EV that uses a gas generator.
• Growing: the Maverick's Canadian sales rose 101% in 2025 to 16,308, and the Bronco and Bronco Sport together sold 31,586.
• Coming: Ford has introduced the Fathom, a new electric mid-size pickup, with Canadian orders expected to open in early 2027.

Ford hybrids, EVs and the federal rebate

• Hybrids. The Maverick comes standard as a hybrid, and the F-150 offers the PowerBoost full hybrid, which also works as a mobile generator on the job site or at the campsite.
• Electric. The Mustang Mach-E is Ford's electric SUV in Canada, with 406 to 515 km of range. It is built in Mexico.
• Commercial EV. The E-Transit electric van is available through Ford dealers for business buyers.

The federal EV Affordability Program pays up to CA$5,000 on an eligible EV in 2026, stepping down in 2027. Imported vehicles must come from a free-trade partner and have a final transaction value of CA$50,000 or less. The Mustang Mach-E Select with the standard-range battery has appeared on the eligible list, since Mexico is covered by the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement; higher trims are over the cap. Fords built in Canada

Ford's Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario is being converted to build Super Duty pickups, and Ford Canada now describes the 2027 Super Duty as also assembled in Canada. Production started at low volume in 2026 and is expected to reach full rate around early 2027, at a total cost of about CA$5 billion. Oakville trucks go to Canadian and export customers alongside US-built trucks, and buyers cannot choose which plant their truck comes from.

Ford's engine plants in Windsor, Ontario, build V8 engines, including the 7.3L gas V8 used in the Super Duty, which Ford has committed to producing there through at least 2029.

Ford warranty and ownership costs

Ford's basic coverage matches most mainstream rivals, while its five-year roadside assistance is longer than many. Running costs depend heavily on the truck you choose: diesel Super Duty maintenance and fuel costs are a different budget from a Maverick Hybrid's.

Buying a used Ford in Canada

Match the truck to your trailer

Used F-150s vary enormously in engine, axle ratio and tow package. Check the truck's actual towing and payload ratings on its door-jamb label rather than the brochure maximum.

Look underneath

Road salt is hard on any truck. Inspect frames, brake lines, rocker panels and cab corners on older F-Series, Ranger and Bronco models, especially vehicles that spent winters in Ontario, Quebec or the Maritimes.

Run the VIN for recalls

Ford has issued several large Canadian recalls in 2026, including one covering more than 627,000 vehicles for trailer-module software and one for about 57,000 F-150s from 2023 to 2026 for fuel-tank straps. Check any used Ford against Transport Canada's recall database and confirm the work was done.

Consider a discontinued model

The Escape and Edge are no longer sold new but remain plentiful used, which can make them good value as family SUVs. Ford dealers continue to service them.
