F-150 engines, towing and fuel consumption

Every F-150 uses a 10-speed automatic. The PowerBoost hybrid uses 1.6 L/100 km less than the 3.5L EcoBoost in combined driving and includes Pro Power Onboard, an onboard generator with 2.4 kW standard and 7.2 kW available. Towing and payload figures are maximums for specific configurations, so check the door-jamb label on the truck you are buying.

What's new on the 2027 F-150

• New base engine: a 3.0L EcoBoost V6 replaces the 2.7L, with the same 325 hp and 400 lb-ft but about 10% more torque in everyday driving, and 8,400 lb of towing.
• BlueCruise while towing: Ford's hands-free highway driving system now works with a trailer attached, on about 210,000 km of qualified roads.
• Carhartt edition: a new Carhartt package for the XLT SuperCrew 4x4, from CA$82,285 including the package.
• Styling: new grilles and wheels on the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum.
• Lightning: the all-electric F-150 Lightning ended production in December 2025. Ford plans to bring it back as an extended-range EV that uses a gas engine to charge its battery.

Know the generations

The 12th generation ran from 2009 to 2014. The 13th (2015 to 2020) switched to an aluminum body, which resists rust far better than steel, and introduced the 10-speed automatic from 2017. The current 14th generation arrived for 2021 with the PowerBoost hybrid.

Check the known issues

On 2017 to 2020 trucks with the 3.5L EcoBoost, listen for a rattle at startup from the cam phasers; Ford extended coverage and introduced redesigned parts. Some 2018 to 2020 5.0L V8s were the subject of oil consumption complaints and an Ontario class action, and the 10-speed automatic has drawn complaints about harsh or sudden shifts. On 2009 to 2014 steel trucks, check frame rails, rocker panels and cab corners for rust.

Run the VIN for recalls

Recent Canadian recalls include 57,077 2023 to 2026 F-150s for fuel-tank straps in September 2026, 49,973 2022 to 2026 vehicles for a parking pawl that may not engage in December 2025, 23,437 2021 to 2023 trucks for a structural issue in October 2025, and 22,663 2023 to 2025 trucks with the Max Trailer Tow package for rear axle bolts. Check Transport Canada's recall database and confirm the work was done.

Match the truck to your trailer

Used F-150s vary widely in engine, axle ratio and tow package. Check the door-jamb label for the truck's actual towing and payload ratings rather than the brochure maximum.
