The Best Car ever BMW built
E39 body style is one of the most sought after designs in the BMW history. Especially 540i, because it came with a 4.4 liter 8 cylinder engine and most of the comfort options were standard in this model. The ride is exceptionally comfortable and quiet on the highway, yet lots of reserved power under the hood is waiting to be released should you floor the pedal. Due to the heavier body compare to the 3 series bimmers, the 540i is a better choice in the 5 series cars as it has the most power. It has no trouble accelerating even in 6th gear, from 50km/hr without the need for shifting down. 6 speed manual transmission is rare in 540i vehicles, as the luxury options usually call for an automatic transmission. But if you can get your hands on a 540 with a manual transmission, it is like having an M5 without the M price tag. I bought this car brand new and sold it to a friend when I moved away for work, and bought it back after returning home, as I loved it so much. The vehicle is really good on gas despite the engine size. I average 8L/100 Km on the highway, city/highway mix is around 10.5Lt/100 Km. I also had a 2005 Audi 6 with 4.2 Liter engine. It was getting 9Lt/100Km on the highway and 12.5Lt/100 Km city/highway mix, so I kept the 540i when it was time to get rid of one of the vehicles, though my Audi had fewer miles and 5 years newer, still couldn't part from my 540i. When our kids were little this car was our favourite long trip car, very spacious and lots of leg room in the back seats.

Great car
Only thing I don't like is the cup holders.Great highway car good on fuel and a pleasure to drive. Being a senior I love the heated steering wheel and seats, Never would sell this car but I am moving to condo with limited parking and want to keep my Z4 still young at heart.

LUXURY AND PERFORMANCE AT ITS BEST
I owned a slightly used 00 BMW 540i 6spd
silver exterior with olive green leather interior.
I must say the most fun and excitement ever
had driving this type of vehicle. BMW really
lived up to the tradition with this model,
perfect body lines aggressive stance with
the torque of a wild cat! I would recommend
this car to a consumer that's steeping out
of a sporty coupe to make room for bigger family vehicle
or business corporate look.
You will enjoy all the room it has to offer with
all the power of driving a sporty little coupe..

2000 BMW 528i
My 2000 BMW 528i has thus far been an excellent vehicle. The car (with a 5 speed autmatic/tiptronic transmission) has just over 117,000km's on the odometer now has has just completed a 8,000km long trip from Ontario out to the tip of the Northern Peninsula in Western Newfoundland thereafter returning home to Manitoba.

This car is a fantastic vehicle as a highway touring sedan and had no problem whatsoever keping up with and passing traffic on its latest trip despite the fact that the car was loaded down with 4 people and all their luggage. Highway mileage was 30+MPG on the trip. Using the car in an urban setting however means the driver can't fully exploit the vehicle's great handing characteristics and fuel economy suffers too.

Bottom line, if you are inclined and can afford to to purchase a european highway touring sedan, the BMW 5 series is the benchmark against which all others are judged!.
