History/Overview
Despite having been around nearly 15 years, the Volvo XC60 is only in its second generation, which was introduced in 2018 and updated last year with mild hybrid powertrains. There’s also a range of Recharge plug-in hybrid models, but those are covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2023, the XC60 gets its second minor update in as many years, as Volvo has rolled out new trim designations. Otherwise, this compact crossover is unchanged.
Available Trims
The Volvo XC60 is available in Core, Plus, and Ultimate trim levels. All are powered by a mild hybrid 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed transmission, and AWD. Core starts with a B5 version of that powertrain, while all others get a more-potent B6 setup.
Standard Features
Core trim starts with dual-zone A/C, a 12-inch gauge display, 9.0-inch touchscreen, and heated/power-adjustable front seats with two-way lumbar. Outside, there are rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming/power-folding mirrors, fog lights, 18-inch wheels, a panoramic roof, and passive keyless entry with hands-free tailgate. Standard safety kit includes lane keeping assist, forward collision mitigation, road sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear park assist.
Plus trim gains adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, 360-degree cameras, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, an integrated garage remote, and power-folding rear headrests.
Ultimate brings four-zone A/C, a heated steering wheel, headlight washers, a head-up display, 20-inch wheels, Nappa leather, crystal-topped shift lever, a cargo-area power outlet, front seats with four-way lumbar/driver’s power cushion extension, and an upgraded stereo with subwoofer.
Key Options
A climate package (Core and Plus) adds heated rear seats, headlight washers, and a heated steering wheel; you can also add rear integrated booster cushions to this bundle.
A Harman Kardon stereo and a Polestar Engineered performance powertrain tuning are both offered as standalone extras.
You can also choose from bright (chrome) and dark (no chrome) exterior themes.
Fuel Economy
Volvo’s fuel consumption estimates for the XC60 B5 are 10.3/8.2 L/100 km (city/highway), while B6 models are rated 11.1/8.7 L/100 km.
Competition
With the XC60, Volvo competes against the Acura RDX, Cadillac XT5, Buick Envision, BMW X3, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Lincoln Corsair, Jaguar E-Pace, Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Infiniti QX50, Lexus NX, and Audi Q5.
