We hate to let it go!
This has been a great car for us. The only reason we're selling is because we now have a company car and don't need a second car. The manual and turbo make it really fun to drive. Love the heated leather seats in the winter and the sunroof and auto windows in the summer.

Reliable and zippy
I've loved my jetta over the years and am just ready to invest in something new. It has always been very reliable and good on gas. I love my heated seat on cold winter mornings and feel safe on winter roads. I've moved a few times in this car and am always amazed at how much I can fit into it with the seats folded down— the trunk is quite deep. I would definitely recommend it and think it will last for a long time.

VW is solid.Enough said.
Built like a tank.

Inside the car there is not too much space.
It is the problem with most VW Jettas.
The most important thing for me is that it is
highly reliable and the design is strict and very standard for me.

Low fuel costs
My expectations and observations have been mixed with this vehicle. It was the first car I bought new, and not having a family at the time, I didn't buy it for it's fuel economy - it was more because it was diesel and that was "different".
Pros: With an average of 40K km/year fuel economy has become a huge deal for me (an increase at the pump has a bigger impact than a bump in the mortgage rates). On its 10th anniversary last year I calculated (using a fairly complex formula) that even with the extra cost of the diesel, I had saved over $7000 by going diesel (compared to a gas Jetta). Don't let the 90 HP fool you, there's plenty of torque to keep up with average sedan.
Cons: I expected more from the so-called German engineering. My wife and I learned to drive standard in this vehicle, but my transmission only lasted 250K km. The well documented burnt out lights issue is a nuisance. Cupholder broke after just a year or so, and the lack of cupholders in that model is a common complaint.

All that said, I have no regrets and look forward to buying another VW diesel in the future (if only they had a diesel minivan in North America).

Excellent Jetta
I bought the Jetta brand new and for the last 10 years it has been a very reliable car that has been inexpensive to drive and other than some large typical repairs at about 180,000km it has cost very little to mainain. It is really nice to drive - very solid and feels safe. My Jetta didn't have the turbo engine and although it had lots of speed it didn't have the pick up that the Turbo does. I had to replace many bulbs over the 10 years - brake lights, running lights, head lights etc. This was an on-going issue but in reality it was very cheap to buy new bulbs and wasn't really a big deal. Overall - I would hight recommend this vehicle.

The coolest thing is the key
Literally, it is the coolest things about Jetta's. But if you ever break it, it's beyond super pricey to replace.
Love heated seats and mirrors being in Canada. It's slightly annoying though how the rear defroster has an auto-off timer that was set to somewhere a lot warmer, meaning we have to turn it on multiple times often.
We have the standard transmission, but overall the car lacks power, and has low RPMs. On the highway at 140kmph it revs over 4000rpm. So not really designed for speed.

I would recommened getting the TDI, or turbo,

Reliable and affordable car, aside from some recent mechanical issues
I bought my 2002 Jetta TDI 4 years ago with 182000 kilometres on it from the Volkswagon dealership in Victoria BC.
I now have almost 300000 kilometres on it and it's still going strong.
My only complaint is the recent issue I've had with the engine air intake manifold and having it clog up. I started noticing less and less power about 6 months ago and it finally reached a ridiculous level, so I found a good local mechanic that specializes in these cars . This is a somewhat common occurrence on this model of car from my understanding, but a clean intake manifold has made it like a brand new car again!
This still hasn't tarnished my belief that this is one of the best cars you can buy and I would't hesitate to buy a newer model sometime down the road or recommend it to my friends and family.
Mileage has been phenomenal, with my best tank getting 1250kms (I estimated to be around 49mpg). On average I'll get between 1050 and 1150kms per tank.
One other note, this car is REALLY good in the snow. I've never had snow tires on it - just good all-seasons - and I've never had a problem with winter driving. I even took it up a local ski hill known for it's bad road in a snowstorm (chains in the trunk just in case) but it made it NO problem.

Jekyll and Hyde
I bought it new it had 3.7 km on it when I turn the key for the first time. 180,000+ km later + basic maintenance and aside from a plastic impeller on the water pump(which I still don't understand), it never disappointed me. Drive like a law abiding citizen and it will reward you with great fuel economy and a smooth ride. Lay into the turbo and the economy suffers but you are rewarded with nibble handling and a strong acceleration. I absolutely loved that 1.8T motor!

Reliability, and fun too!
Done the basic maintenance (oil changes, tire pressure, etc.) regularly and been rewarded with a reliable car that's a fun, sporty drive.
Over the years I've had to do the repairs you'd expect (brakes, exhaust.
It likes to have snow tires in the winter.
Comfortable for passengers, plenty of trunk space.

It's all about the little things.
The great thing about all VWs is that it's the little neat things that make them great.

I'm quite sure my Jetta TDI is a base model of TDI, yet it still comes with all of the comforts that other manufacturers only offer on their top of the line trims. Like automatic mirrors, the vertical seat adjustment, lumbar support, the center console arm rest.

It's my favourite affordable car to drive, has amazing mileage, and looks sharp all the time. I have the front lowered about 2 inches, which reduces the comfort a little bit, but increases handling.

Also I lowered the comfort rating because of the diesel engine as it is a little louder (and not a nice louder) than most engines, but it's still music to my ears after driving it for 4-5 years.

This car is one of a kind. If your looking for an older car around 2000-2004, trying to save gas, get performance, and look good. This is the car, the volkswagen jetta 1.8t allows for great performance with a great look that also has great fuel efficiency.
