2022 Hyundai Kona Electric

History/Overview

In 2018, Hyundai made its first-ever move into the subcompact crossover category with the Kona, which quickly became very popular despite – or because of – its unconventional styling. The following year, the company capitalized on the Kona’s appeal with this battery electric version.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

Hyundai has refreshed the Kona Electric for 2022 with updated interior and exterior styling.

Available Trims

Hyundai offers the Kona Electric in Preferred and Ultimate trim levels. Both use an electric motor fed by a 64-kWh battery promising 415 km of driving range. All Kona Electrics are FWD; there is no AWD option.

Standard Features

Seventeen-inch aluminum wheels are included, as are LED taillights and daytime running lights, heated side mirrors, and passive keyless entry.

Inside, there’s a 10.25-inch digital gauge display, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment, a six-speaker stereo, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, automatic A/C, and a heated/leather-trimmed steering wheel.

Preferred trim’s driver safety assists include rear occupant alert, lane change assist, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision alert with pedestrian/cyclist detection and automatic braking, lane keeping assist, and driver attention warning.

Ultimate trim’s safety additions are automatic high beams, highway driving assist, front parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control.

Outside, Ultimate gains LED headlights, and rain-sensing wipers. Inside, you get heated rear seats, leather upholstery, power driver’s seat with lumbar, ventilated front seats, head-up display, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, wired Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging, eight-speaker audio, a sunroof, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Fuel Economy

Hyundai’s energy consumption estimates are 1.8/2.2 Le/100 km (city/highway).

Competition

There are few vehicles that compete directly with the Kona Electric. Kia has electric versions of the Soul and Niro, and Chevrolet offers a new-for-2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV.
