History/Overview
Difficult as it may be to believe, the current Volvo XC90 is only the mid-size SUV’s second generation. It was introduced in 2016 to follow up the original design’s 13-year run.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
New this year are mild-hybrid powertrains, which are available in a trio of new trim levels. Volvo offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain, too, but it’s covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
Available Trims
Volvo sells the XC90 in Core, Plus and Ultimate trims, all of which are powered by a mild-hybrid 2.0L turbo four-cylinder powertrain, an eight-speed transmission, and AWD.
Standard Features
Core trim’s interior comes with four-zone A/C, a digital gauge cluster, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, an auto-dimming mirror, leatherette upholstery, heated/power-adjustable front seats with two-way lumbar, and power-folding rear headrests. Outside, there are auto-dimming/power-folding side mirrors, fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic roof, passive keyless entry, and a hands-free tailgate. Seven-passenger seating is standard, but you can option in a six-passenger layout.
XC90’s standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go (which Volvo calls pilot assist), blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, forward collision mitigation, and road sign recognition.
Plus trim adds headlight washers, 360-degree cameras, 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, integrated rear-seat booster cushions, heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats.
Ultimate trim brings rear door sunshades, a head-up display, 21-inch wheels, a crystal-topped shifter, Nappa leather, four-way front-seat lumbar with driver cushion extension, and an upgraded stereo with subwoofer.
Key Options
A Core climate packages adds heated rear seats and steering wheel, and headlight washers.
Ultimate offers a lounge package of massaging front seats and a nubuck headliner.
A Polestar Engineered configuration gets a performance-tweaked drivetrain.
Fuel Economy
Volvo’s fuel consumption estimates are 11.9/9.1 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
The XC90’s competitors include the BMW X5, Infiniti QX60, Land Rover Discovery, Buick Enclave, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Cadillac XT6, Jaguar F-Pace, Acura MDX, Lexus RX, Audi Q7, and Mercedes-Benz GLE.
