1991 Chevrolet Corvette

Trim: ZR-1

King of the hill
I still remember my dad picking my up from junior high school in this thing. All the kids walking towards it whispering how awesome it was. After that, everyone thought I was cool! Ok, well my dad was cool at least.

At the time it was the ZR-1 and the Viper neck and neck for the most awesome car on the road. The viper had an acceleration edge, the ZR-1 had a top speed.

The ZR-1 of that era put out about 400hp. back in those days it was a lot. While todays ZR-1 use the simple pushrod engine design with a supercharger. The 90's ZR-1 used a normally aspirated DOHC 4 valve per cylinder all aluminium v8. It was and still is the most complex engine Chevy ever put into a corvette. They are pretty rare cars and although reliable, it would not be easy to source parts.

1992 Nissan 240SX

Trim: 240 SX coupe

Super fun RWD car
My favourite car of all time is a 1995-1996 Nissan 240sx. Pearl white with black leather interior and a 5 speed transmission to be exact. I never was able to realise that dream. But I ended up buying a 1992 240sx and an insurance write off auction.

The damage was all cosmetic and it started up without a problem and ran perfectly. Unfortunately it's biggest problem was not to do with it's accident. It was rust!

I had a lot of patch work to do to get the thing road worthy again. It's not something I'd ever do again.

Once I got the thing working ok and safe I drove it for a winter. A winter in Winnipeg with a Rear wheel drive 240sx. It was the best winter of my life!

If I was going anywhere I was going there sideways! Doe nuts, drifting / power-sliding around slippery corners, fish tailing..It was great! I really miss that old piece of junk.

If you live in a climate like Vancouver where these cars have not dissolved already, you should think about getting one for some cheap thrills. I really miss mine.

Of course since then I have had more powerful rear wheel drive cars. But none have been as fun as my old 240sx. I'm crying right now as I write this. I have to go.

1997 Nissan Maxima

A classy luxury ride with a surprising amount of sport
There cars where one of the best kept performance serets of the 90's. They where light weighting only around 3000 pounds (sometimes less) with Nissan's VQ30DE engine making almost 200 hp with over 200 ft/lb torque. These unassuming sedans could have a 5.0 mustang a run for it's money! Reliability was unquestionable as this was one of the best engines in the world at the time. Honda and Toyota still used timing belts for their engines. Not so with Nissan. You got a strong timing chain and an engine that never needed any maintenance other then oil changes.

The car was boring. My friends made fun of me in their Hondas at the time, telling my I looked like an old man in it. I raced them and I beat them.

1996 Acura Integra

Toss-able economic tin can
This car was one of the most fun to drive cars I ever owned. All out acceleration wasn't anything to write home about but that handling and balance where almost perfect. Mine was a 5 speed manual and the shifter was the most enjoyable to sue of any car I have owned (BMW 3 series, porsche 911, VW, Honda prelude,Infiniti G35).

Reliability and interior comfort are all Honda. It was durable and logical.

The only real weakness of this car is also it's biggest strength. It's small and light and feels like a tin can.

1996 Saab 900

Setting the record straight on some great cars
I had a Saab 900 turbo convertible and I loved it! I did a lot of research before I bought this car on the used market and found they are very misunderstood.

People tend to associate quirkiness with lack reliability. Well in my experience and most others who owned saabs will tell you differently. Depending on the model, they can be very reliable if you follow a simple rule: stick to the 4 cylinder models. In the saab world in the 90's and a lot of the 00's the 4 cylinder options where more powerful than the v6s and far more reliable.

Check out some 90's saab convertibles on this site. I'm sure they are ultra cheap and will give you a lot of fun trouble free service.

1997 Honda Prelude

Reliable fast and well built
It's a same these cars got phased out and replaced by the RSXs
integras and hot civics of it's day. It's true that a good power to weight ration will make a car go fast and handle better. So having a smaller car with similar peak horsepower should make for a better car right? Wrong! The prelude had a nice torquey (in comparison) engine with a nice solid nice riding platform. I've had an Integra and a 3 series BMW before. I feel the prelude was more comparable to the BMW as the BMW was attempting to have good performance and ride quality.

Bring back the prelude honda!

2006 BMW X5

Great car to lease, not reliable enough to buy
For such a big SUV the ride is amazing. Acceleration, cornering confidence and overall sportiness are among the best in class. The 6 speed automatic transmission with manual override was a lot of fun too but a little sluggish. Also, the thing produced a beautiful powerful exhaust note making you feel like your driving something very powerful. I have driven older BMW 540i's with the same basic engine and they sounding boring in comparison.

Reliability is a problem with most BMWs and this one is no exception. The 6 speed automatics are actually not bad at all for reliability. The same goes for the 4.4l v8 engine. The problems are in the details. Front suspension bushings gave out, power mirror retractors failed, adaptive headlights malfunction, rain sensing wipers malfunctioned.

There was a clunking under certain types of acceleration they never was able to be fixed.

It was fun while it lasted.

2001 Volkswagen GTI

by oxkart on 10-15-2012
fun little ride
I bought this car with 30,000 km and sold it at 65,000 km. During that time I had a mass airflow sensor failure, a broken seatbelt, and a door opening sensor failure.

The interior, although well designed was made of cheap materials. The used this sprayed on rubber coating to make things feel expensive, unfortunately you could pick it off with your fingernail. Seats where comfortable and supportive. For the cars size, it was very versatile and had loads of back seat room and interior space. With the back seats folded down I could fit me bike in there without a problem.

Handling was a mixed bag. Although the engine was quite strong and willing, the suspension was too soft, The 5 speed manual was a tad rubbery but pretty good.

The car got great fuel economy compared to the amount of power it made. they suggest premium fuel but it ran just fine on regular.

2000 BMW 3 Series

Great Car when everything worked
I bought this car with 150,000 km and had no major problems with it. Unfortunately the minor problems list is endless. Clutch chatter, power door locks failing, thermostat failure, passenger airbag sensor failure, cam position sensor failure, Seat leather tearing, hood grill falling off and many other small things. I don't think the car was ever working 100% at any time during my ownership. But again, none of the problems actually stopped the car for driving properly.

What this car does well is handle and move you around in a comfortable way. Mine had the stiffer sports suspension (factory option) so it got a little rough on bad roads but otherwise it was smooth and quiet. It took corners confidently and with ease. It was very hard to feel out of control.

The seats where comfortable (although already falling apart) and very supporting. the driving position was great and the clutch feel was light but provided good feedback. The shifter was floppy and vague, really letting the car down. I was almost sure it needed it's bushings replaced but my mechanic said he had seen a lot worse.

In conclusion, I would say the basic car underpinnings are good and reliable. But there are too many little things that go wrong. This is the kind of car you buy new or on lease while all this stuff is under warranty.

2004 Infiniti G

Trim: G35 6MT Sedan
by oxkart on 10-15-2012
Reliable Luxury Sport
I jumped on this deal when I found it on autoTRADER.ca a year ago. A G35 sedan with a 6 speed manual transmission! That's rare option for the sedan models. Although they are not as pretty as the coupes, they offer all the performance with a lot more practicality.

With it's real wheel drive platform and double wishbone suspension it handles really well. it's very tossable for such a big car but stays firmly planted on the road (unless your trying to get the tail to come out). The steering has some weigh to it, just about perfect I'd say, great for feeling the road and what the car is doing. The clutch is a bit heavy but the shifter is very precise, short and direct.

On the luxury side, Although interior amenities are decent, I would describe it best as a leather wrapped Nissan. The engines sounds some into the cabin even under light acceleration. Under hard acceleration things get quite loud and with a lot of vibration. This is what you expect for a sports car but not from a luxury car.

The last car I had was an e46 BMW (3 series) and i was very comfortable in the seats and loved the low slung driving position (I am 185 cm tall). The G35 by contrast is quite uncomfortable for me and the seating is too hight for my liking.

Coming form the BMW this car is excellent!. I bought this car used, with 190,000km already on the clock. after a year and a half of ownership, the only problem I had was a sway bar joint that cost me $35.

Would I buy this car again? YES!
