Reliable, fun car
No engine problems after 2 years of ownership. Reliable, fun to drive... and the VW community made being a VW owner fun.

Very reliable and fuel efficient German car !
one of the best cars I've ever driven. very stable and reliable car. doesn't look old for its age at all from the inside and outside. fuel efficient as the motor size is only 1.8, but very powerful due to its turbo. saves gas and accelerate pretty fast.

Power and handling meet economy
The VW GTI has always been a great combination of performance and economy. The 2001 GTI combines a plush comfort package (including 8 speaker stereo, heated seats, great ventilation, power everything, etc) with a stiff frame and powerful yet efficient 1.8 litre 20 Valve Turbocharged engine. Great year round vehicle.

My GTI
Leather seat, color of the car beige. With 2 accicents my car was really thought as I knew. she got wheels and she got style . She is mine. It's more than just a car. It's a Volkswagen. A lot of people HATE VW engine but it's a VW thing you would'nt understand.

2001 Volkswagen GTI

fun little ride
I bought this car with 30,000 km and sold it at 65,000 km. During that time I had a mass airflow sensor failure, a broken seatbelt, and a door opening sensor failure.

The interior, although well designed was made of cheap materials. The used this sprayed on rubber coating to make things feel expensive, unfortunately you could pick it off with your fingernail. Seats where comfortable and supportive. For the cars size, it was very versatile and had loads of back seat room and interior space. With the back seats folded down I could fit me bike in there without a problem.

Handling was a mixed bag. Although the engine was quite strong and willing, the suspension was too soft, The 5 speed manual was a tad rubbery but pretty good.

The car got great fuel economy compared to the amount of power it made. they suggest premium fuel but it ran just fine on regular.

2001 Volkswagen GTI

Trim: VR6

My first car
The 2001 VW GTI VR6 was my first car. It didn't have a ton of power, only 170 hp or something like that, but it sounded great and ran so smooth and had a 5-speed manual transmission that shifted really nicely. It was enough power to be really fun to drive around the city, plus it was very comfortable for the highway, too. However, it was pretty clunky over potholes and bumps because it had 17-inch tires, but i loved the way those tires looked on that car. I never did like the gold paint, though.

Except for the fact that i had to get a new battery the first summer I had it (at 80K, which is pretty normal) and a clutch at 120K, it gave me almost 4 years of fairly low maintenance reliability. But beware, insurance rates are pretty high on this car, boo.

The seats were excellent, slide/tilt/height adjustable, heated and leather, and felt really nice even after many years, and when you released them to let people into the back seat, they flipped up and forward to allow a wide space to step into the back seat, which made it easier to put our daughter's car seat in. I also liked the quality of the interior, everything felt and looked nice, especially the red and blue-lit gauges. too bad it only had a tape deck and am/fm stereo, and the climate control was weird.

It was a hatchback, so my hockey equipment was easy to toss in the trunk, and when i needed to, i could drop the back seats and pack up a couple bikes.
