History/Overview
Volvo introduced the stylish S90 in 2017 as its then-new flagship sedan, which replaced the S80. As of this year, the S90 is one of Volvo’s oldest designs after the XC90 crossover, but you’d never know it thanks to styling that has aged quite well.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, Volvo swaps out the S90’s gasoline-only powertrain for a new standard mild-hybrid setup, which gives up a few horsepower to last year’s version but makes up for that with more torque. The new engine comes with a B6 designation, replacing last year’s T6 badge.
Available Trims
Volvo offers the S90 in a single Inscription trim level. Power is from a 2.0L turbocharged gas engine, which works with a 48-volt mild hybrid system to power an eight-speed transmission and AWD.
Standard Features
Every S90 comes fitted with four-zone A/C, power sunshades in the rear doors and rear window, digital gauges, auto-dimming (and power-folding side) mirrors, fog lights, 19-inch wheels, a panoramic roof, and a crystal shift lever. You also get heated/ventilated/power-adjustable front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, a Harman Kardon stereo, and wireless phone charging.
The S90’s basic safety package comprises rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, pilot assist highway driving system, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front/rear park assist, lane keeping aid, oncoming lane mitigation, and road sign recognition.
Key Options
A lounge package adds massaging front seats and rear-seat ventilation. A climate bundle brings headlight washers, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. Finally, the advanced package includes a head-up display, 360-degree cameras, an air purifier, and a power trunk.
Fuel Economy
Volvo’s fuel consumption estimates for the S90 are 10.4/7.5 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
The Volvo S90 competes against the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Acura TLX, Lexus ES, Jaguar XF, and Genesis G80.
