History/Overview

Introduced in 2003, the XC90 is Volvo’s oldest SUV model, a mid-sizer with three rows of seats. The first-gen model ran until 2015, receiving numerous updates along the way; today’s second-generation XC90 arrived in 2016 with an all-four-cylinder engine lineup that is uncommon in this class.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

The 2022 Volvo XC90’s changes involve a shuffling around of features within the car’s option packages. There’s also a nominal price increase.

Available Trims

Volvo offers the XC90 in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trims. Under the hood of all three is a 2.0L four-cylinder engine; Momentum comes with an entry-level T5 version, while a more potent T6 configuration is optional there and standard in R-Design and Inscription. AWD and an eight-speed transmission are standard across the range.

A T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid version of the XC90 is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.

Standard Features

In Momentum trim, you get four-zone A/C with third-row vents, digital gauges, auto-dimming mirrors, fog lights, navigation, power-folding side mirrors, 19-inch wheels, panoramic roof, leatherette upholstery, passive keyless entry, hands-free tailgate, heated/power front seats with driver memory, and wireless phone charging.

Momentum’s safety suite comprises rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, oncoming lane mitigation, and road sign recognition.

R-Design models gain 20-inch wheels, various cosmetic tweaks inside and out, Nappa/Nubuck leather seating, a tailored dash cover, front-seat four-way lumbar, driver’s power cushion extension, and a Harman Kardon stereo with subwoofer.

Inscription trim gets unique wheels and cosmetic items, puddle lights, and ventilated seats with power side bolsters.

Key Options

A climate package brings headlight washers, and heated rear seats and steering wheel.

An advanced pack bundles a head-up display and 360-degree cameras.

The Inscription Lounge option includes massaging front seats, and a Nubuck headliner.

Fuel Economy

Volvo’s fuel consumption estimates for the XC90 are 11.5/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway) with the T5 powertrain, and 12.4/8.9 L/100 km with the T6 setup.

Competition

The Volvo XC90 competes with the Lexus RX, BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Infiniti QX60, Acura MDX, Land Rover Discovery, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT6, Jaguar F-Pace, and Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
