  • Buy the RF if you want a solid roof for Canadian winters with open-air driving at the push of a button.
  • Look elsewhere if you need more than two seats or meaningful cargo space.
  • Look elsewhere if you want more power for similar money; the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ make 228 hp.

Buying a used MX-5 in Canada

Know the generations

The current fourth-generation MX-5 launched for 2016 and has been sold as a Soft Top and RF. Earlier generations date back to 1990 and are popular weekend cars, but expect age-related wear.

Check the recalls

2016 to 2023 cars are covered by the airbag recall 2024-538, and 2024 and 2025 cars by the stability control recall 2025-275. Ask for proof the work was done.

Inspect for rust

Earlier-generation MX-5s are known to rust at the rear wheel arches and sills, so inspect those areas carefully on cars driven through Canadian winters.

Look for signs of track use

Check the clutch, tires and brakes, and ask whether the car has been on track or modified.
