NEW FOR 2012:
- Minor model refresh with numerous changes.
While mechanicals and overall design stay fairly similar to the previous year, the 2013 Mazda MX-5 receives a laundry list of changes, mainly to interior trim but also to bodywork.
Mazda has given their droptop sports car a new front bumper, fog lamp cover, and radiator grille design with new mesh. Black centre mini-caps for all wheels, a smaller hood for the instrument cluster, and numerous other small changes have been made to the interior and exterior if the MX-5.
GX trimmed models receive a glossy dark grey roll bar garnish and interior decoration panel along with a bright silver finish on the headlamp bezel.
GS trimmed models get new 17-inch Dark Gun Metallic wheels, glossy dark grey roll bar garnish, power retractable hard trop in Brilliant Black, power door mirrors in Brilliant Black, black headlamp bezel, new exterior graphics, body-coloured interior decoration panel with graphics, red stitching on black cloth seats, and a paint palate limited to four colours.
GT models also receive new 17-inch alloy wheels, glossy dark grey interior decoration panel, and tan leather replaces Dune Beige leather upholstery (only available with Sparkling Black Mica exterior paint).
Originally known as the Miata, the MX-5 uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that comes with a five-speed manual on the GX, and a six-speed manual on the GS and GT. All can be optioned to a six-speed automatic with manual shift mode that includes paddle shifters on the GS and GT.
The GX comes with a black vinyl roof, while the GS and GT come with a power retractable hardtop.
Features on the GX include 5-speed manual transmission, 16-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, front and rear stabilizer bars, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, manual Z-type vinyl convertible top, power windows, 6-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA audio with auxiliary input, mesh aero board, dual front airbags, engine immobilizer anti-theft system, tilt steering, steering wheel mounted cruise and audio controls, power locks, keyless entry, fog lights, side impact airbags, door pocket insert, soft feel centre arm rest, dynamic stability control, mesh front grille, and glossy dark grey roll bar garnish/decoration panel/meter ring.
GX models can be optioned with a six-speed automatic transmission with sport mode and air conditioning.
GS trim adds six-speed manual transmission, sport suspension with Bilstein shocks, limited slip differential, strut tower bar, seat height adjuster, air conditioning with climate control, trip computer, power retractable hard top, in-board command buttons, indicator light, safety sensors, 17=inch dark gunmetal wheels, exterior and interior graphics, and black cloth seats with red stitching.
GS models can be optioned with a six-speed automatic transmission with sport mode and paddle shifters, but this option removes Bilstein shocks and limited slip differential.
GT trim adds unique 17-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, Xenon headlights (HID), 7-speaker Bose premium audio, smart keyless entry system, CD changer, adjustable heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, satellite radio, Bluetooth phone connectivity, leather-lie centre armrest and console lid, leather-like door trim panel, leather parking brake handle, silver roll bar garnish, and chome finish outer door handles.
GT models, like GS models, can be optioned with a six-speed automatic transmission with sport mode and paddle shifters, but this option removes Bilstein shocks and limited slip differential.
