History/Overview

Introduced in 2021, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L is the brand’s first crack at extending its venerable Grand Cherokee’s appeal to shoppers looking for three-row accommodations in an upscale SUV. It was how Jeep introduced the auto industry to its fifth-generation Cherokee, which also comes in a redesigned two-row configuration redesigned launched year.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

For 2022, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L adds an optional front passenger touchscreen and rear-seat displays with Amazon Fire TV capability.

Available Trims

The Grand Cherokee L is available in Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve. Depending on trim, power is from a 3.6L V6 engine, or a 5.7L V8, both of which are matched with an eight-speed transmission and four-wheel drive.

A standard-length Grand Cherokee (sans L) and a plug-in hybrid 4xe model are covered in separate buyer’s guide entries.

Standard Features

Laredo comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, passive keyless, heated seats, power driver’s seat adjustments, digital gauges, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone A/C, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker stereo. Safety kit includes active lane management, adaptive cruise, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision mitigation with pedestrian/cyclist detection, and rear parking sensors.

Altitude brings 20-inch wheels, and leather upholstery.

Limited gets 18-inch wheels, LED fog lights, heated rear seats, a power front passenger seat, and an integrated garage remote.

Overland gains 20-inch wheels, and adds power-fold side mirrors, panoramic sunroof, Nappa upholstery, ventilated front seats, power steering column adjustments, a nine-speaker stereo, hands-free tailgate, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power-folding third-row seats, off-road/trailer hitch cameras, and rain-sensing wipers.

Summit gets a larger touchscreen, four-zone climate control, a backup camera washer, 360-degree cameras, a side distance warning, highway drive assist, traffic sign recognition, intersection collision alert, and parking assist.

Finally, Summit Reserve adds 21-inch wheels, nicer leather, a McIntosh stereo, and front passenger touchscreen controls.

Key Options

A luxury tech group for Laredo adds a power tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, satellite radio, and wireless phone charging. The Limited luxury tech II package brings passive keyless, auto-dimming mirrors, ventilated seats, electric steering wheel adjustments, surround-view cameras, and a rear camera washer.

In Overland, you can add active driver assists, a head-up display, off-road camera views, intersection collision assist, night vision, and around-view cameras.

Fuel Economy

Jeep’s fuel consumption estimates for the Grand Cherokee are 13.0/9.4 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 3.6L V6, and 16.7/10.9 L/100 km for V8 models.

Competition

Jeep offers the Grand Cherokee L as an alternative to compete with the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander, and Chevrolet Traverse. A well-equipped Grand Cherokee is also a strong upscale value next to a Mercedes-Benz GLS, Infiniti QX60, Acura MDX, Lexus RX L, BMW X7, or the Audi Q7.
