History/Overview

The Honda Pilot dates back to the early 2000s, when it introduced the brand’s loyalists to the practicality of a mid-size SUV with three rows of seats. Today’s third-generation Pilot arrived in 2016.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

For 2022, Honda has eliminated the entry-level LX trim and replaced EX with a Sport designation. There’s also a new Trailsport trim with off-road-friendlier tires and some cosmetic tweaks. A number of formerly optional features are now standard, which we’ve detailed below.

Available Trims

Honda offers the Pilot in Sport, EX-L Navi, TrailSport, Touring, and Black Edition trims. All include a 3.5L V6 engine, nine-speed automatic transmission, and AWD.

Standard Features

New standard features in this year’s entry-grade Sport trim include LED fog lights, the LaneWatch blind spot display, a sunroof, roof rails, an auto-dimming mirror, integrated garage door remote, a power driver’s seat, and heated steering wheel. You also get heated front seats, 20-inch wheels, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, three-zone A/C, a digital gauge cluster, passive keyless entry, seven-speaker audio, and a front wiper de-icer.

Sport trim’s safety package comprises forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane departure warning/lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise, and automatic high beams.

EX-L Navi trim gains navigation, leather seats, heated second-row seats, a power front-passenger seat, power tailgate, and front and rear parking sensors.

TrailSport brings amber ambient lighting, trim-specific leather upholstery, and black exterior elements.

Touring gets a rear-seat entertainment system, ventilated front seats, 11-speaker audio, in-car PA system, wireless charging, 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming/power-folding side mirrors, hands-free tailgate, auto-levelling headlights, and blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. Black Edition builds on Touring with black exterior styling elements.

Key Options

Your only option is in Touring trim, where you can choose from seven- or eight-passenger seating.

Fuel Economy

Honda’s fuel consumption estimates are 12.4/9.3 L/100 km (city/highway).

Competition

Among the Honda Pilot’s competitors are the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Ford Explorer, Volkswagen Atlas, Dodge Durango, and the Mazda CX-9.
