Ford's Expedition Max is a rarity among full-size SUVs for not offering V8 power; instead, it gets its power from a turbocharged 3.5L "EcoBoost" V6 shared with the Ford F-150 and other Ford and Lincoln models.

That doesn't mean this big truck can't keep up with its eight-cylinder competitors: properly equipped, an Expedition Max will tow 4,138 kg (9,100 lbs) while accommodating eight people inside.

This super-sized version of the Expedition shares its independent rear suspension with its smaller sibling, another mechanical attribute that sets this truck apart from its key competitors, the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon. But while Ford owns the full-size pickup market with the F-150, the Expedition sells a little more than a quarter as many Expeditions as GM sells of its big utilities.

Expedition gets minor updates for 2017 in a new Limited appearance package and a high-tech continuously controlled damping suspension that's now standard in Platinum trim models.

That turbo V6 makes 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, and comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. Fuel consumption estimates are 16.1/12.2 L/100 km (city/highway).

One thing Expedition lacks is a larger engine option, as the GM trucks do; in those trucks, the uprated motor also comes with an eight-speed transmission.

The Expedition Max comes in Limited and Platinum trims. The $70,799 Limited model includes 20-inch wheels, heated and cooled front seats, heated outboard second-row seats, power-adjustable front seats with driver memory, power-folding third-row seat, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear auxiliary climate controls, navigation, satellite radio, SYNC 3 infotainment, power-adjustable pedals, auto-dimming rearview mirror and driver's side mirror, front and rear parking sensors, power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers and power-deploying running boards.

At $72,799, Platinum trim adds blind spot monitoring and addition chrome and stainless steel exterior trim.

Options in both models include second-row bucket seats and white platinum metallic and ruby red metallic paint colours.
