Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Reliability: Recalls, Warranty and Maintenance

Let's say you've found a three-year-old Elantra Hybrid on AutoTrader with sensible kilometres and a fair price.

The fuel savings are the whole point, but the question nagging at you is a plainer one: what has gone wrong with these sedans, and who pays if something does?

Here's the short answer. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid reliability is easiest to judge through the records you can actually check. Transport Canada's recall database lists four recalls that name the hybrid or its hybrid hardware for the 2021 to 2026 model years, and each one has a dealer fix. Hyundai Canada covers the hybrid system for eight years or 160,000 km, and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) rates the 2026 model at 4.7 L/100 km combined.

Key Takeaways

  • Transport Canada lists four recalls that name the Elantra Hybrid or its hybrid hardware for 2021 to 2026 models, as of Oct. 29, 2026.
  • Recall 2026-235 covers a hybrid power control unit (HPCU) that could overheat on 2024 to 2026 models. The fix is a dealer software update.
  • Recall 2023-468 covers 2021 to 2023 hybrids that, after entering fail-safe mode, could slowly accelerate when you release the brake. The fix is motor control unit software.
  • Hyundai Canada's Hybrid System Warranty runs eight years or 160,000 km, and its powertrain warranty covers the engine and transaxle for five years or 100,000 km.
  • NRCan's February 2026 fuel guide puts the 2026 Elantra Hybrid's annual fuel cost at $1,410, against $2,040 to $2,070 for the 2026 2.0L gas Elantra (20,000 km a year at $1.50 per litre).

What the Record Says About Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Reliability

We haven't found a Canadian long-term study of this car that we'd stand behind. What we can show you is harder evidence: the recalls Transport Canada has logged, what the warranty pays for and what NRCan says the car costs to fuel.

The current Elantra Hybrid arrived for the 2021 model year. Hyundai Canada lists the 2026 version with a 1.6L hybrid engine, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) and 139 hp. Our 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid review covers how it drives.

Elantra Hybrid Recalls by Model Year

These are the recalls in Transport Canada's database that name the Elantra Hybrid or a hybrid component, checked Oct. 29, 2026.

Other Elantra Recalls Worth a VIN Check

The database lists more Elantra recalls for these years that don't mention the hybrid. One covers an eight-speed DCT and another only the N performance models. Others don't say which versions are affected, like a 2023 recall for the transmission electric oil pump's circuit board and a 2024 recall for the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. A VIN check settles it.

Common Problems: The Two Hybrid Recalls to Know

The two recalls that touch the hybrid system matter most, because both affect how the car moves or whether it starts at all. You'll find plenty of owner complaints online too, but those are anecdotes, not a record anyone can check.

HPCU Overheating on 2024 to 2026 Models

Transport Canada recall 2026-235, published May 14, 2026, says a problem in the HPCU could cause it to overheat. That can leave the car unable to start, or drop it into a reduced power mode with the malfunction indicator lamp on, and an overheating HPCU creates a fire risk. Hyundai notifies owners in writing, and the dealer updates the HPCU software.

If that lamp lights up in a 2024 to 2026 Elantra Hybrid, don't wait for the letter.

Unexpected Creep on 2021 to 2023 Models

Recall 2023-468 is narrower, and it's an unintended acceleration issue. Transport Canada says the problem can only happen under certain conditions after the car enters fail-safe mode, when it could slowly accelerate after you lift off the brake pedal. A car that moves on its own could cause a crash, so clear this one even if you've never noticed anything odd. The fix is a software update to the motor control unit (MCU).

Maintenance Schedule: What a Hybrid Elantra Needs

Owning a hybrid doesn't get you out of the service bay. Hyundai Canada bases its maintenance schedule on time or kilometres, whichever comes first, and sends owners to the owner's manual for the full list.

That little book matters more than usual here. Hyundai Canada suggests servicing the car at a Hyundai dealer at the intervals it sets, so the warranty stays in force. With hybrid coverage that runs eight years, a missing service record can turn into an argument later.

What to Keep an Eye On

The gas engine still needs its oil and filter changes, and tires, brakes and wiper blades wear out on a hybrid like on any compact sedan. Keep every invoice, recall paperwork included. Here are answers to the most common questions about hybrids.

Ownership Costs: What NRCan Says You'll Spend on Fuel

Fuel is the one running cost with a solid Canadian number behind it, and it's where the hybrid earns its keep. NRCan rates the 2026 Elantra Hybrid at 4.8 L/100 km in the city, 4.5 on the highway and 4.7 combined. The 2026 gas Elantra with the 2.0L engine is rated at 6.8 to 6.9 L/100 km combined, depending on the version.

NRCan's 2026 Fuel Consumption Guide turns those ratings into money. At 20,000 km a year and $1.50 per litre for regular gas, its February 2026 figures estimate $1,410 a year for the 2026 hybrid and $2,040 to $2,070 for the 2026 2.0L gas car.

That's $630 to $660 a year on 2026 models as of February 2026, or a little over $50 a month. Our 2026 Hyundai Elantra review covers the gas car.

Older cars are a little thriftier on paper: NRCan rates 2021 and 2022 models at 4.4 L/100 km combined, and every model year since at 4.7.

Warranty Considerations: What Hyundai Canada Covers

No Canadian source we trust tracks Elantra Hybrid repair prices, so we won't guess. Here's what the warranty takes off the table instead. Hyundai Canada lists these terms on its warranty page, read Oct. 29, 2026:

  1. New Vehicle Limited Warranty: five years or 100,000 km.
  2. Powertrain Warranty: five years or 100,000 km on the engine and transaxle.
  3. Hybrid System Warranty: eight years or 160,000 km. Hyundai notes it covers hybrid vehicle transmissions.
  4. 24-hour roadside assistance: five years, unlimited kilometres.

The page doesn't itemize the hybrid battery under the hybrid coverage, so ask a Hyundai dealer to confirm it in writing.

A car sold while still under the five-year, 100,000 km warranty keeps that coverage, transferred to the next owner at no charge. All warranty work is done at a Hyundai dealership. And Hyundai says terms can vary by model year, so check the owner's manual.

A 2022 Elantra Hybrid first sold in 2022 would keep its hybrid coverage until 2030, unless it passes 160,000 km first. Here's how automaker warranties compare, and whether an extended warranty on a used car is worth it.

Used-Buying Checklist for an Elantra Hybrid

A used Elantra Hybrid makes sense when its paperwork does. Read up on what to look out for in a used hybrid, then work through this list.

  1. Run the VIN. Transport Canada's recalls page says to look up recalls by VIN on the manufacturer's website.
  2. Ask for proof of the hybrid fixes. On 2024 to 2026 cars, look for the HPCU update under recall 2026-235. On 2021 to 2023 cars, look for the MCU update under recall 2023-468.
  3. Check the older recalls too. A 2021 or 2022 car should also show the seat belt and camera work.
  4. Read the service history against the owner's manual and confirm the in-service date for the warranty math.
  5. Book a pre-purchase inspection and run a vehicle history report such as CARFAX Canada.
  6. Test it from a cold start and watch for warning lamps.

These four pre-purchase checks for used hybrids go deeper.

Which Model Years Need the Most Paperwork

The 2021 and 2022 cars carry three of the four recalls. The 2023 model has one hybrid recall (2023-468), and the 2024 to 2026 cars have one (2026-235). That's a paperwork count, not a verdict: a 2021 with every repair documented beats a 2025 with no records.
