Hyundai IONIQ 5 Reliability, Common Problems and Maintenance Guide

Hyundai IONIQ 5 reliability centres on one part: the integrated charging control unit (ICCU), the subject of the model’s broadest recall. Transport Canada recall 2024-701 covers 2022 to 2024 models, and the fix is a software update plus an ICCU inspection or replacement at a Hyundai dealer. Routine IONIQ 5 maintenance is light. Hyundai Canada covers the high-voltage battery for eight years or 160,000 km.
Key Takeaways
- Transport Canada’s recall database lists five separate recall issues for the 2022 to 2026 IONIQ 5, as of Oct. 26, 2026; the ICCU recall is the broadest, covering 2022 to 2024 models.
- An ICCU fault stops the 12-volt battery from charging, which can trigger a reduced power mode; Transport Canada says a warning light and messages appear before any loss of power.
- Hyundai Canada’s Electric Vehicle System Warranty runs eight years or 160,000 km and includes the high-voltage battery, read Oct. 26, 2026.
- NRCan rates the 2026 IONIQ 5 Long Range RWD at 504 km and the Long Range AWD versions at 417 to 463 km.
- Before buying used, run the VIN for open recalls and ask for dealer records showing recall 2024-701 was completed.
Reliability Overview: Hyundai IONIQ 5 Reliability in Transport Canada Recall Data
Transport Canada recall data is clear. The IONIQ 5 has one recall spanning three model years and four narrower campaigns.
IONIQ 5 Recalls by Model Year
Here’s every recall issue the Transport Canada database lists for the 2022 to 2026 IONIQ 5, checked Oct. 26, 2026. The database also lists notice 2024-552, a bilingual compliance-label correction that Transport Canada says is not a recall.
| Recall | Model years | Issue | Remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022-249 | 2022 | Parking pawl could briefly disengage after you park | Shifter control unit software update |
| 2024-062 | 2023 | Rear inner axle shaft could break and cut power to the wheels | New rear inner axle shaft |
| 2024-174, replaced by 2024-701 | 2022 to 2024 | ICCU damage stops 12-volt charging | Software update; ICCU and fuse inspected, replaced if needed |
| 2025-054, replaced by 2025-193 | 2025 (IONIQ 5 N only) | Reduced braking with left-foot braking; car may keep accelerating briefly with N e-Shift | Dealer software update (a second one for cars already updated under 2025-054); avoid both features until repaired |
| 2026-033 | 2026 | Instrument cluster could reboot while driving | Over-the-air or dealer software update |
Why Fewer Moving Parts Help
The IONIQ 5 is a battery-electric vehicle, so there’s no engine to fail. The Government of Canada notes that some EVs don’t need oil changes, engine tune-ups, spark plugs or engine air filters. That cuts out a whole category of repairs.
Software and charging hardware now carry the risk an engine used to.

Common Problems: ICCU, 12-Volt Battery and Software
Among IONIQ 5 problems, the ICCU recall reaches the most model years. It handles charging, and it also keeps the 12-volt battery charged.
The ICCU Charging Recall and Loss of Drive Power
Transport Canada recall 2024-701 explains the failure. Over time, the ICCU could become damaged. The 12-volt battery then stops charging; the car can drop into a reduced power mode and, if you keep driving, the wheels can lose power. A warning light and messages come first.
The recall also covers the IONIQ 6 and several Genesis models. It replaced recall 2024-174; cars fixed under that campaign need the new repair too. Hyundai notifies owners by mail; the dealer updates the software, then inspects the ICCU and its fuse.
The 12-Volt Battery and Smaller Glitches
A dead 12-volt battery can be the symptom rather than the cause, so ask for a diagnostic scan before accepting a new battery as the fix. Here are some strange problems a weak battery can cause.
Three of the other four campaigns are software fixes. The 2026 cluster reboot gets an over-the-air update, and the 2025 IONIQ 5 N brake recall needed a second repair.

Maintenance Schedule: What an IONIQ 5 Needs
Hyundai Canada bases its maintenance schedule on time or kilometres, whichever comes first. The owner’s manual for your model year lists the exact intervals.
What EV Maintenance Skips and What It Doesn’t
A Government of Canada page, updated in July 2026, cites a CAA estimate that the average EV owner saves 40 to 50 per cent on maintenance compared with a gas vehicle. CAA also warns that some owners see shorter tire life on EVs, and that tires affect EV range by 20 to 40 per cent.
Focus on these:
- Tires: check pressure monthly and do each tire rotation on schedule.
- Brake pads and brake fluid: have them inspected at each service.
- Cabin air filter and wiper blades at the intervals in your manual.
- Software updates, including any recall work.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 Range by Model Year
Range is a reliability question too, because poor battery health shows up as lost kilometres. These are Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) ratings from the 2026 Fuel Consumption Guide and its open data.
| Model year | Standard Range | Long Range RWD | Long Range AWD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 354 km | 488 km | 414 km |
| 2023 | 354 km | 488 km | 422 km |
| 2024 | not listed | 488 km | 410 km |
| 2025 | 373 km | 504 km | 425 to 463 km |
| 2026 | not listed | 504 km | 425 to 463 km |
For 2025 and 2026, the Long Range AWD is rated at 463 km on 19-inch wheels and 425 km on 20-inch wheels. The XRT is rated at 417 km and the IONIQ 5 N at 356 km. The 2026 Long Range RWD uses 16.9 kWh/100 km combined. More on the 2025 IONIQ 5’s range gains and XRT trim.
Winter cuts that number. In CAA’s winter range test, published Feb. 10, 2025, an IONIQ 5 drove 262 km at −7 to −15 degrees Celsius, 36 per cent below its 410 km rating.
Expected Repair Costs: What the Hyundai IONIQ 5 Battery Warranty Covers
Hyundai Canada Warranty Terms
Hyundai Canada lists these terms on its warranty page, read Oct. 26, 2026:
- Electric Vehicle System Warranty: eight years or 160,000 km, including the high-voltage traction battery.
- New Vehicle Limited Warranty: five years or 100,000 km.
- 24-hour roadside assistance: five years, unlimited kilometres.
The five-year warranty transfers to the next owner at no charge. Hyundai says terms can vary by model year, so confirm them in your owner’s manual.

What You Pay For Out of Pocket
Recall repairs cost you nothing in practice; Transport Canada says manufacturers almost always do them free. Hyundai’s warranty covers defects in material or workmanship, and all warranty work is done at a Hyundai dealership.
Budget for routine items yourself: tires, wiper blades, brake service and filters. After eight years or 160,000 km, the battery is out of that coverage.

Used IONIQ 5 Checklist
- Check recall status by VIN on Hyundai Canada’s recalls page, or search Transport Canada’s motor vehicle safety recalls database by model and year.
- Ask for the dealer repair history showing recall 2024-701 was done on 2022 to 2024 cars.
- Charge it on a Level 2 charger during your test drive and watch for warnings.
- Confirm how much of the eight-year, 160,000 km battery coverage is left.
- Run a vehicle history report such as CARFAX Canada.
Which Model Years to Target
The ICCU recall covers 2022 to 2024 IONIQ 5 models, so documentation matters most there. The 2025 and 2026 models aren’t part of it. Their only recalls as of Oct. 26, 2026, are the N’s brake and N e-Shift software and the 2026 cluster update.
