The All-Electric Jaguar Type 01 Shocks with Divisive Design, More Than 1,000 HP
Jaguar has finally taken the wraps off its first new vehicle since 2018 and the only new vehicle it will have on showroom floors when it eventually goes on sale. It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that this is an enormously important launch for the British brand, but it’s not quite a home run.
Based on the already controversial Type 00 concept, the production-ready Type 01 maintains the preview’s monolithic design, while adding a pair of doors to turn the long coupe into a four-door.
Described by the brand as bearing “dramatic proportions and clean surfacing,” the reception online has been less generous. Commentors widely panned the design, with one likening it to the result of “an air conditioner and a filing cabinet [getting] frisky one night.”
Although the design is disliked, it will at least help the Type 01 go far. Despite its boxy shape, this is the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever put on sale. Thanks to extensive time in the wind tunnel, active vanes, and a three-stage deployable spoiler, this car has a coefficient of drag of just 0.23 — similar to a Porsche Taycan.
Together with a 118 kWh, that will allow the Type 01 to travel as far as 644 km per charge, according to Jaguar estimates that were based on North American testing. An 850V electric vehicle (EV) architecture, meanwhile, means that this Jag will be able recoup as many as 321 km of range in as little as 13 minutes at a DC fast charging station.
Drivers will also be able to get to their destination quickly, thanks to a trio of motors that combine to delivers 1,015 hp and 1,006 lb-ft of torque. They help the Type 01 to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, and allow it to go from 100 km/h to 180 km/h in 4 seconds flat, meaning that you’ll always be able to pass slower traffic on two-lane highways.
Jaguar has also leaned into its racing history, with the Type 01. Real torque vectoring allows it to hold the road around corners, while a perfect 50:50 weight distribution should help it manage bends neutrally.
Jaguar says it was important for the interior to wrap around the driver. Four seats are separated by a central spine, and occupants are bracketed by brass trim. A 24-inch OLED screen acts as an infotainment screen and a smaller, seven-inch screen is placed within easy reach of both the driver and passenger to make common commands easy to achieve. The Type 01 will be available with a panoramic soundbar and sensory audio seats.
The Jaguar Type 01 is expected to arrive in 2027 with pricing to be announced at a later date. The brand has previously said that it is trending upmarket, though, so expect it to cost a lot.
