Polestar 4 SUV Coming Soon (With a Real Rear Window!)
Polestar is rounding out its lineup with a new variant. By adding the suffix “SUV” to the name of its compact electric crossover, the Polestar 4, the automaker is providing the model with even greater appeal, all while fixing one of the issues that caused much ink to spill for the coupe: the lack of a rear window.
As opposed to the Polestar 4 coupe, which uses a rear facing camera to show drivers what’s behind them, the Polestar 4 gets something positively pedestrian: glass. The goal is clear for the Swedish automaker, maintain the distinctive style that sets it apart, while responding to the practicality needs of its clientele.
However, it’s not like Polestar is giving up on the 4’s standard body style. Instead, the SUV body style is a strategic addition to the 4’s lineup for buyers who want their electric vehicle (EV) to do it all.
From a technical standpoint, the new 4 SUV will sit on the same platform as the regular model. However, Polestar’s engineers have taken this opportunity to introduce a handful of chassis improvements that should provide drivers with a more refined ride and a better balance between performance and comfort.
Unfortunately, Polestar has so far released only one image of the new model (above), which shows the vehicle only from the C pillar rearward. The SUV is expected to be fully unveiled on September 2.
Like the existing version of the Polestar 4, the new variant is based on a 400V electric platform. The existing model has a max estimated range of 630 km, when equipped with a single motor. However, that’s on the much more optimistic WLTP (European) test cycle. Due to a variety of factors, Canadian range estimates tend to be much lower. It’s not clear if the Polestar 4’s shape will affect its aerodynamic efficiency or add significant weight, thus reducing its range.
Buyers who care more about performance than range can opt for the twin-motor version of the Polestar 4, which makes 544 hp. There’s every reason to expect that the new SUV model will get the same single or twin motors powertrain, and will make about the same amount of power.
Production of the Polestar 4 SUV is expected to take place in Busan, South Korea, and the model is expected to be sold in almost every market that the automaker currently has market presence. Indeed, the word "almost" is important in that sentence since, as this is written, the U.S. plans to ban sales of Polestar vehicles as of the 2027 model year.
In markets that allow Polestar to sell vehicles, the Polestsar 4 SUV is expected to hit the road early next year.
