Next-Gen Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Gets More Power Than Ever and 60-Inches of Screens
Chevrolet officially took the wraps off the 2027 Silverado 1500 today. With a familiar, but refined look, the truck seeks to impress potential customers with old-fashioned looks, old-fashioned power, and state-of-the-art tech.
The automaker has yet to reveal exactly how much power the Silverado 1500 will make, but has said that, with the next-generation 6.6L V8 engine under its hood, the truck will be the most powerful, naturally-aspirated vehicle in its segment.
Those who aren’t in the market for the most powerful truck in the segment, will have a variety of alternatives to pick from, including a 5.7L V8, a 2.7L TurboMax that’s paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission, and a 3.0L turbo-diesel engine from Duramax.
The sound of the engines in Custom trim Silverado 1500s and up will now exit through standard dual exhausts that are located under newly designed taillights, which mirror the C-with-a-line-on-top styling of the forward LED daytime running lights.
“The goal with the new Silverado was to create a truck that looks stronger, more modern with demanding presence at first glance, while staying true to the authentic truck character customers expect from Chevrolet,” said Phil Zak, Chevrolet’s executive design director.
To that end, the wheel openings have been made more pronounced, the rocker treatments have also been exaggerated, and the overall shape is intended to be more confident and truck-like.
The bold design continues inside, where a 16.3-inch centre touchscreen sits proud of a 12.2-inch driver display behind the steering wheel. In the ZR2 and High Country trims, an 11.5-inch passenger display is added, in addition to a head-up display, providing occupants with more than 60-inches of screen in all. If that wasn’t enough, the 2027 Silverado 1500 will help occupants charge the screens in their pockets, too, with dual wireless charging pads in the centre console.
Naturally, Super Cruise — GM’s hands-off driving assistant — will be available and is the only advanced driver assistance system in the class that works while towing, which is ideal for truck owners.
For 2027, Chevrolet is offering three lifted variants of the Silverado 1500: the ZR2, the Trail Boss, and the Custom Trail Boss. The automaker describes the first as the most capable iteration of the ZR2 trim ever, featuring 35-inch MT tires, a two-inch lift, and a new hood with a power dome. It gets standard rear E-lockers, as well Multimatic DSSV dampers and jounce dampers to help the truck stay composed over high-speed desert terrain.
The trim now features Torch Red accents inside, with Torch Red-edged seatbelts, and — for the first time ever in a GM vehicle — forged carbon-fibre trim on the doors and console. The ZR2 Bison Edition adds distinctive front and rear bumpers, rocker protection, 18-inch beadlock capable wheels, and skid plates to protect the truck’s underbelly.
The 2027 Silverado 1500 Trail Boss, meanwhile, will get 34-inch MT tires, a two-inch lift, an off-road hood, and unique visual cues. It also gets Torch Red-edged seatbelts in addition to fabric accent inserts with a custom perforation pattern to communicate its off-road capabilities.
Finally, the Custom Trail Boss trim serves as an entry point to off-road style, per Chevrolet. It, too, gets a two-inch lift and 34-inch tires. Those who want off-road capability without having to climb up into their truck (not as high, anyway) can go for the Z71, which now a full trimline (not just an options package), which gets underbody protection, hill descent control, and an off-road suspension.
The Custom trim, meanwhile, offers essential content for private customers, including dual exhausts, 20-inch wheels, and more. The most basic version of the Silverado 1500 is the Work Truck trim, and it gets a straightforward interior with a priority put on uptime for busy tradespeople.
At the other end of the spectrum, the High Country will serve as the model line’s flagship, featuring all of the available technology, 22-inch After Midnight machine faced wheels, and richer trim elements with more polished detailing. An exclusive Tritan Satin grille adds to the truck’s presence, and the trim material is used throughout the vehicle.
Chevrolet plans to put the 2027 Silverado 1500 on sale by the end of this year and will reveal more detail, such as pricing and power, closer to that time.
