With the new 2014 F-Type, Jaguar goes back its roots as a sports car manufacturer – and what a sports car it has made! Although the design is muscular and modern, it draws its inspiration from the classic F-Type/XK-E, particularly the dual centre mounted exhaust and those slim rear taillights.
But the F-Type is more than just a pretty face. As with the XJ, the F-Type opts for aluminum construction, and the chassis is a full 10 per cent more rigid than the XKR-S grand tourer. For the moment, the F-Type is only offered as a convertible; the roof is insulated, and can retract in 12 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. A hardtop coupe will follow next year.
Inside, the cabin’s design is suitably modern – you’ll find plenty of leather, but wood is nowhere to be found. The cozy cockpit has a definite sporty look with retracting air vents, and satin-finish orange accents for the switchgear. Navigation is standard across the board.
Three versions of the F-Type are available: V6, V6 S, and V8 S. Both V6 and V6s use a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 shared in common with the XF and XJ, and develop 340 and 380 hp respectively. The V8 S features a 5.0-litre supercharged eight-cylinder making a whopping 495 horsepower – enough to slingshot the F-Type to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. Both S models receive an active exhaust system as standard.
S models also benefit from additional performance-oriented equipment: the V6 S receives a mechanical limited-slip rear differential and performance brakes, with the V8 S getting an electronically controlled variable locking differential and even larger brakes. Both S models get adaptive dampers that assess body motion and pitch rates 100 times per second.
The F-Type V6 includes 18-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights, full LED tail lights, retractable rear spoiler, retractable door handles, engine stop/start, electronic parking brake, Dynamic drive mode, sport suspension, sport exhaust, centre-mounted exhaust pipes, push-button start, 5.0-inch TFT instrument cluster display, leatherette trimmed dashboard and door panels, leather and suedecloth upholstered seats, aluminum interior trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel with black gear shift paddles, 10-speaker 380-watt Meridian sound system, and an eight-inch touchscreen display with AM/FM/satellite radio, USB, aux-in, navigation and Bluetooth.
The Premium Pack adds wind deflector, power folding auto-dimming door mirrors, heated mirrors, driver seat, mirror and steering column memory, garage door opener, 14-way power adjustable sport seats, proximity key, interior storage with lockable cover, dual-zone automatic climate control and cabin filter.
Climate Pack adds heated seats and steering wheel.
Vision Pack adds blind spot monitor with cross-traffic alert, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and automatic high-beams, reverse traffic detection, front and rear parking sensors, rear parking camera.

Exterior Black Pack adds gloss black exterior trim, front splitter, and rollover bars.
Design Pack adds gloss black rear valance, body-coloured side sill extensions, rear diffuser, bumper splitter, and aero splitter. Design Pack with Exterior Black Pack combines the two features.

F-Type V6 S adds upgraded brakes, sport suspension with adaptive dynamics, active exhaust, 19-inch alloy wheels, metallic foot pedals, black gloss interior trim, mechanical limited-slip differential, Ignis orange shift paddles, dark aluminum interior trim, configurable ambient interior lighting, proximity functionality for intelligent key, and leather upholstered dashboard and door panels.
