History/Overview
The Volvo XC90 Recharge is a relatively new name for an established model – the plug-in hybrid version of Volvo’s mid-size luxury crossover offering. As of last year, Recharge is the label Volvo attaches to its PHEV models.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
All that changes for 2022 is a reshuffling of a few of the XC90 Recharge’s standard and optional features.
Available Trims
Volvo offers the XC90 Recharge in Inscription Expression, R-Design, and Inscription trim levels, both powered by a combination of a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine (that adds supercharging in certain configurations) and electric power. An extended-range model will go 58 km on electricity alone, while the base setup promises 29 km with a full charge.
Standard Features
Inscription Expression trim comes with four-zone A/C, digital gauges, navigation, leatherette upholstery, power-folding side mirrors, 20-inch wheels, a panoramic roof, passive keyless entry, hands-free tailgate, heated/power-adjustable front seats, and wireless phone charging.
The XC90 Recharge’s standard safety items include rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front/rear park assist, lane keeping assist, oncoming lane mitigation, and road sign recognition.
R-Design adds rear door sunshades, a stitched dashboard, Nappa/Nubuck/vinyl upholstery, an adjustable driver’s cushion extension, and upgraded audio with subwoofer.
The full Inscription treatment adds bright exterior trim elements, a blond headliner, grey ash wood interior trim, ventilated front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and power side bolsters.
Fuel Economy
The XC90 Recharge’s extended-range version makes more efficient use of electricity with estimated energy consumption of 3.4 Le/100 km, while the base model is rated for 4.0 Le/100 km. Gas-electric hybrid consumption starts at 9.1/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway) for the base model, while the extended-range variant’s estimates are 9.2/8.6 L/100 km.
Competition
The Volvo XC90 Recharge competes with plug-in versions of some of the industry’s best-known luxury mid-size SUVs, like the BMW X5 xDrive45e, the Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, and the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid.
