History/Overview
Through three generations, the Toyota Tacoma has served fans of the brand’s compact and mid-size pickup models as a rugged and reliable workhorse that’s good at getting dirty. The current third-gen Tacoma was introduced in 2016 and has received minor updates since then.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
This year, the Tacoma’s Trail package gains a lifted suspension and new bronze-coloured wheels. Meanwhile, TRD Pro also gets a suspension lift and new wheels.
Available Trims
Toyota offers Tacoma buyers Access Cab and Double Cab body styles. Both are powered by a 3.5L V6 engine and, depending on trim, a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive is standard across the line.
Standard Features
Tacoma Access Cab’s standard kit includes a six-speaker stereo, 8.0-inch touchscreen, navigation, a 400-watt cargo bed power outlet, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a manual sliding rear window, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone A/C, 16-inch alloy wheels, auto on/off headlights, and fog lights. Forward collision mitigation, automatic high beams, lane departure alert, and radar cruise control comprise the Tacoma’s suite of driver safety aids.
Opting for the automatic transmission brings passive keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring, and a limited-slip rear differential.
Some Double Cab models add blind spot monitoring, a power-sliding rear window, a sunroof, 17-inch wheels, a locking differential, and leather upholstery; the base Double Cab makes do with a smaller 7.0-inch touchscreen, a manual driver’s seat, and manual air conditioning.
Finally, a Nightshade package brings bird’s-eye camera views, parking sensors, a power tailgate lock, passive keyless, a seven-speaker JBL stereo, 18-inch wheels, and LED headlights.
Key Options
In Double Cab models, an SR5 package adds an 8.0-inch touchscreen, driver’s lumbar, fog lights, a power driver’s seat, auto-dimming mirror, and a bed-mounted power outlet.
TRD Sport models add 17-inch wheels, dual-zone A/C, passive keyless, navigation, a power rear window, and sport shocks. TRD Sport Premium builds on that with a sunroof, wireless phone charging, leather, and blind spot monitoring.
A TRD Pro package brings LED headlights, a skid plate, leather, Fox shocks, multi-terrain monitor, LED fog lights, and a locking rear diff. There’s also a TRD Off Road bundle with crawl control, multi-terrain select, and Bilstein shocks. Off Road Premium models get a sunroof, wireless charging, leather, blind spot monitoring, and multi-terrain view monitor.
Fuel Economy
Toyota’s fuel consumption estimates for the Tacoma are 13.0/10.5 L/100 km (city/highway) with the automatic transmission, and 13.8/11.4 L/100 km for automatic models. The various TRD packages tend to use a little more fuel.
Competition
The Toyota Tacoma competes with the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier, and Jeep Gladiator.
