History/Overview

The Ford Ranger, which used to be the brand’s smallest pickup truck model, is now its mid-range model with this year’s introduction of the Maverick compact. For its part, the Ranger arrived in 2019 as part of the mid-size pickup class’s revitalization following successful redesigns of some of the segment’s other models.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

Despite rumours last year that a redesigned Ranger lineup was on its way – including a high-performance Raptor variant – the Ranger is unchanged for 2022.

Available Trims

Ford offers the Ranger in XL, XLT, and Lariat trims. XL and XLT start in a two-door SuperCab configuration; optional for XLT and standard in Lariat is a four-door SuperCrew body style. All Ranger models are powered by a 2.3L turbo four-cylinder engine, a 10-speed transmission, and four-wheel drive.

Standard Features

XL comes with manual side mirrors and door locks, 16-inch steel wheels, manual A/C, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, four-speaker audio, and forward collision mitigation.

XLT adds fog lights, power-adjustable side mirrors, a power-locking tailgate, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic A/C, blind spot monitoring, automatic high beams, lane keeping assist, keyless entry, a six-speaker stereo, and Sync infotainment.

Lariat gains LED headlights/foglights/taillights, heated side mirrors, 18-inch wheels, passive keyless entry, backup sensors, and power front seats.

Key Options

XLT models offer a package that bundles backup sensors, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and a 110-volt power outlet; another brings heated seats, leather upholstery, and remote engine start. A tech package adds adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors, and navigation.

Lariat’s option is a distinct tech package with a B&O stereo and rain-sensing wipers.

You can also add a Tremor off-road package.

Fuel Economy

Ford estimates the Ranger’s fuel consumption at 11.9/9.7 L/100 km (city/highway) for models with an optional stop/start system. The Tremor’s ratings are 12.4/12.3 L/100 km.

Competition

Ford’s competition for the Ranger includes the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Jeep Gladiator, Honda Ridgeline, and Toyota Tacoma.
