NEW FOR 2008:

- Fuel requirement changed from "Premium fuel required" to "Premium fuel recommended"

- Exterior colours: Electric Blue Mica and Copper Red Mica now come with black interiors

An all-new model in 2007, the CX-7 is unchanged for 2008. The company has scaled back its premium fuel requirement to "recommended" from "required", but notes that regular fuel may reduce the engine's performance.

The CX-7 uses a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Two trim lines are available; both can be optioned to an active torque split all-wheel drive system that delivers up to 50/50 torque distribution if it senses slippage.

Features on the GS include 18-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, heated mirrors, privacy glass, variable intermittent wipers, intermittent rear wiper, automatic headlight control, rear spoiler, tilt wheel, cruise control, power locks with keyless entry, leather-wrapped wheel, floor mats, CD stereo with wheel-mounted controls, and anti-theft system.

The GT adds automatic climate control, Xenon headlights, fog lamps, cargo cover, electroluminescent gauges, power sunroof, eight-way adjustable driver's seat, and heated leather seats.

Available options on the GS include a power sunroof; the GT can be optioned with keyless start, six-CD stereo and navigation system.

Nicely-sized and beautifully styled, the CX-7 features razor-sharp handling and an elegant interior, although rear-seat legroom is a bit tight. The engine can be difficult to modulate and it suffers from turbo lag, but once it picks up, it's very fast and fun to drive.

The folding rear seats drop at the pull of a handle, and the liftgate is easy to open and close. Shop it against crossovers such as the Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX, Chrysler Pacifica and Nissan Murano.
