After a hiatus for the 2019 model year, the Audi S8 is back for 2020 with updated styling and new mild hybrid powertrain technology that debuted last year in various other of the brand's models.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
While the S8's redesign is the big news, the car also gains some new standard features, like Amazon Alexa integration, a premium version of the virtual cockpit digital gauge cluster and a first aid kit.
Audi offers the S8 in a single trim. It uses a 4.0L V8 engine matched with a 48-volt electric motor that provides a performance boost. An eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro AWD put the car's power to the road.
Outside, all S8 models come with 20-inch wheels, HD matrix LED headlights, LED taillights with dynamic rear turn signals, soft-close doors, four-wheel steering, a panoramic sunroof, a power trunklid, and passive keyless entry.
The S8's cabin features a smartphone interface, a head-up display, Valetta leather upholstery and Valcona leather seat surfaces, ambient lighting, 22-way sport front seats with diamond pattern stitching, massage and four-way lumbar, Nappa leather console and armrest trim, a heated steering wheel with electric adjustments, front and rear heated seats, heated front surfaces, power rear and door sun screens, digital gauge cluster, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, ventilated front seats, four-zone climate control, navigation, Audi Connect services, cruise control, a B&O stereo, and an air ionizer with fragrance dispenser.
Safety kit includes a 360-degree exterior camera system, adaptive rain-sensing wipers, pre-sense city forward and rear collision avoidance assist, blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, exit assist, and front and rear parking sensors.
A laser lighting package brings laser high beams and organic LED (OLED) taillights.
The driver assistance group comprises Audi's active safety features, like intersection, traffic jam and emergency assistance, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, active cruise control and turn assist.
There are two packages to augment rear-seat occupant contentment. One brings power seat adjustments with lumbar and heaters and massage. The other adds USB charging ports, a separate music interface and a DVD changer.
As of this writing, Audi had not published its 2020 fuel consumption estimates. All we've got for now are the ratings for the 2018 S8 model and its conventional V8 engine, at 16.2/9.9 L/100 km (city/highway). Audi's new mild hybrid system promises thriftier performance, so we'll update these figures when Audi provides them.
