Hyundai Sonata Maintenance Cost, Reliability and Common Problems

Fuel is the running cost you can pin down: Natural Resources Canada estimates $2,580 a year for the base Sonata Preferred Trend AWD (the N Line, also gas, is $2,640) and $1,500 for the Sonata Hybrid.
Key Takeaways
- Hyundai Canada asks owners to follow the owner's manual's severe-usage schedule, which means more frequent oil and filter changes than the normal schedule.
- The Hyundai Canada powertrain warranty covers the engine and transaxle for 5 years or 100,000 km, and the Hybrid System Warranty runs for 8 years or 160,000 km.
- The 2011 to 2014 Sonata had Transport Canada engine recalls for connecting rod bearing wear, and Hyundai extended the 2011 and 2012 short block warranty to 10 years/200,000 km.
- NRCan rates the 2026 Sonata Preferred Trend AWD at 8.6 L/100 km combined and the Sonata Hybrid at 5.0 L/100 km, a gap worth $1,080 a year in fuel at NRCan's assumptions.
- On a used Sonata, look for service records and an up-to-date recall history by VIN; on 2015 to 2018 cars, ask a dealer whether the knock sensor software update applies.
What Drives Sonata Maintenance Costs in Canada
Your Sonata maintenance costs depend less on the badge than on age, kilometres and how the car was looked after. A three-year-old Sonata under warranty mostly needs routine maintenance: oil changes, filters and tire rotations. A 12-year-old car out of warranty is a different budget, because repairs land on you.
Two Canadian factors push the numbers. The first is the schedule. The second is warranty coverage, which decides whether a failed part is Hyundai's bill or yours.
Hyundai Canada's Severe-Usage Maintenance Schedule
Hyundai Canada's FAQ gives a direct answer on when to service a Hyundai: follow "Maintenance Under Severe Usage Conditions" in the owner's manual, or ask a dealer for the minimum requirements.
You'll need to know your driving conditions to get an accurate schedule. Canadian winters, road salt, short trips and stop-and-go traffic are exactly the conditions that move a car onto the severe list.
That matters for your budget. The Hyundai Sonata maintenance schedule you follow sets how often you pay. The severe schedule shortens the interval for oil and filter changes and some fluid services, so expect frequent scheduled maintenance visits.
Between visits, Hyundai Canada recommends a few owner checks:
- Check engine oil at every fill-up and top up if it's below the lower mark.
- Check coolant at least monthly at the reserve tank, never at the radiator cap.
- Check tire pressure on all four tires at least monthly, spare included.
- Have a dealer check automatic transmission fluid, linkage and controls once a year.
What the Powertrain Warranty and Recalls Cover at No Cost
The Hyundai Canada warranty is the biggest single lever on repair costs. According to Hyundai Canada's warranty page, the New Vehicle Limited Warranty and the powertrain warranty both run for 5 years or 100,000 km. The powertrain coverage includes the engine block and internal parts, the timing chain and tensioners, the oil pump and the water pump.
Every new Hyundai also includes five years of roadside assistance with unlimited kilometres. Hybrid owners get more. The Hybrid System Warranty covers 8 years or 160,000 km. The 12-volt battery warranty is shorter, at 2 years or 40,000 km, and replacement parts a dealer installs carry 1 year or 20,000 km.
Recalls are free, including safety recalls. Hyundai Canada says recall work costs the owner nothing and that anyone charged for a recall-related repair gets reimbursed in full. Coverage can vary by model year, so confirm your car's terms with the VIN before you budget.
Our guide to warranty killers on new and used vehicles covers what can void that coverage.
Fuel Costs Versus Repair Costs, by Powertrain
Fuel costs and repair costs are separate measures, and fuel is the one with a reliable Canadian number. Natural Resources Canada publishes an annual fuel cost for every model, based on 20,000 km a year and $1.50/L for regular gas.
| 2026 Sonata version | Engine and transmission | City / highway / combined (L/100 km) | NRCan annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonata N Line (FWD) | 2.5L turbo four-cylinder, 8-speed dual clutch | 10.1 / 7.3 / 8.8 | $2,640 |
| Sonata Preferred Trend AWD | 2.5L four-cylinder, 8-speed automatic | 9.9 / 7.0 / 8.6 | $2,580 |
| Sonata Hybrid | 2.0L four-cylinder hybrid, 6-speed automatic | 5.3 / 4.6 / 5.0 | $1,500 |

Hyundai Sonata Reliability by Model Year
Hyundai Sonata reliability depends heavily on the generation. The engine story is concentrated in older cars. Newer model years have mostly drawn software and component recalls, which are fixed for free.
2011 to 2014: Connecting Rod Bearing Recalls
The 2011 and 2012 Sonata are the model years to research hardest. Transport Canada recall 2015-428 says the crankshaft on certain cars may not have been properly cleaned of metallic debris during manufacturing. The debris can restrict oil flow to the connecting rod bearings. They wear out early.
A worn bearing can fail and stall the engine while you're driving. It can also turn on the oil pressure lamp. Dealers inspect the engine and replace the assembly if needed, and Hyundai raised the short block warranty to 10 years/200,000 km for original and later owners of 2011 and 2012 cars, according to Transport Canada's recall notice.
The 2013 and 2014 Sonata with the 2.0L and 2.4L engines followed under recall 2017-197 for residual debris from factory machining. A separate recall, 2020-592, covered connecting rod bearings on certain Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid cars.

2015 to 2018: Knock Sensor Software and Shifting Complaints
The 2015 to 2018 Sonata is a calmer bet. AutoTrader's used Hyundai Sonata review for 2015 to 2018 found few concerns overall. Engine failure was rare and reported almost entirely during the warranty period.
The 2.4L GDI made about 185 hp and the 2.0L turbo made 242 hp, both with a six-speed automatic. Some owners called the brakes and steering vague, especially on hybrids. Others reported hard shifting and clunks, which dealers usually fixed with new transmission software. Ask a Hyundai dealer whether the knock sensor software update has been done; it helps the engine computer catch abnormal knock before it causes damage.
Also check recall 2021-589. It fixes a turn-signal fault on 2015 to 2017 cars with a software update. The hybrid of that era has its own character, covered in our 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid test drive. The 2019 model year falls outside that review, so check its recall history by VIN.
2020 and Newer: Fuel System and Dual-Clutch Transmission Recalls
The current generation arrived for the 2020 model year. The Transport Canada recalls reviewed for this guide involve its fuel system and transmission, not engine bearings.
Recall 2025-637 covers 2020 to 2023 Sonatas with the 1.6L turbo: a worn check valve in the purge control system can make the fuel tank expand, touch hot parts and leak fuel. Recall 2022-568 covers certain 2021 and 2022 cars with the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, which could lose power to the wheels after entering fail-safe mode.
Our 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid review covers the hybrid version of this generation. The 2024 refresh kept the 2.5L and an 8-speed automatic, as our 2024 Hyundai Sonata review explains.
A recall on your model year isn't a verdict; an unfixed recall on your specific car is.

Common Sonata Problems to Check on a Used Car
Most Hyundai Sonata problems on a used car show up in paperwork before they show up on the road. Check the records, then the car.
Recall Status, Engine Knock and the Oil Pressure Light
Start with the VIN. Hyundai Canada's recall site looks up every recall tied to a vehicle, and a dealer can confirm whether each one was done.
On the test drive, listen for a metallic knock from the engine that rises with revs, and watch for the oil pressure lamp or a check engine light. The knock and the oil lamp were warning signs in the connecting rod bearing recalls.
Shift from Park to Drive to Reverse several times. Hesitation or clunking between positions can point to the shifter linkage, which may need lubrication, adjustment or replacement. Confirm the backup camera works each time, too; AutoTrader's used review found fixes that ranged from a camera module to a full central display.
Maintenance Items Previous Owners Skip
A few jobs get missed often enough to check on every used Sonata:
- Spark plugs on time, as the owner's manual lists, because they matter to the long-term health of a GDI engine.
- A fresh cabin air filter, since a clogged one hurts the heater, defroster and air conditioning.
- A healthy 12-volt battery; replace a weak one before it causes electrical problems.
- Factory-specified oil, filters and fluids, because a failed non-approved part may not be covered.
Service records matter as much as the parts. Hyundai Canada says customers must perform all required maintenance for the warranty to hold, and records belong in the Service Passport. AutoTrader's used review warns that even one missed or late oil change can put remaining coverage at risk.
If the factory warranty is close to expiring, read whether an extended warranty on a used car makes sense.
