NRCan hadn’t posted 2027 ratings when we checked; Honda Canada’s 2027 CR-V page still lists as little as 6.4 L/100 km.
How the 2.0-Litre Hybrid Compares With the Gas CR-V
The hybrid pairs a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with two electric motors and an e-CVT for 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft, per Honda Canada. The gas CR-V’s 1.5-litre makes 190 hp.
On paper, the hybrid’s combined fuel economy rating means 24 per cent less fuel than the gas model. That fits NRCan’s estimate that a typical hybrid saves 20 to 40 per cent over a gas-only vehicle. Our 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid review covers the first Canadian model.
Why the TrailSport Hybrid Uses More Fuel
The TrailSport rides on all-terrain tires and 18-inch wheels, and NRCan rates it about a third of a litre per 100 km higher in every cycle. Our 2026 CR-V TrailSport Hybrid review covers the trim. Never leave pavement? The other trims are thriftier.
Real-World Consumption: What AutoTrader Testers Recorded
Ratings come from a lab. Owners drive in traffic and in the cold. So how close does the CR-V Hybrid get?

City and Highway Results: Where the CR-V Hybrid Saves the Most
Most cars burn more fuel in the city than on the highway. The CR-V Hybrid flips that, at 6.0 L/100 km city and 6.9 highway. The gas AWD CR-V sits at 9.1 and 7.6.
EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive
Honda’s two-motor system switches modes on its own. EV Drive handles starts, light cruising and braking in electric-only mode. In Hybrid Drive, the engine turns a generator while the electric motor drives the wheels. Our illustrated guide to hybrids explains the basics.
City driving and stop-and-go traffic are where this pays. Every red light lets regenerative braking top up the battery.
Highway Speeds Narrow the Gap
At high cruising speeds, Engine Drive takes over: the engine connects straight to the wheels, Honda says. So in steady highway cruising, the CR-V Hybrid behaves much like a regular car. Its highway rating beats the gas model’s by only 0.7 L/100 km.

Factors Affecting Efficiency in Canadian Driving
NRCan’s list includes acceleration, speed, temperature, traffic, accessories and all-wheel drive. A few matter more in a CR-V Hybrid.
Cold Weather and the Five-Cycle Test
NRCan ratings use a five-cycle test that includes a city run at -7°C, so the label bakes in some cold driving.
NRCan cites an American estimate, from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), that a drop from 24°C to 7°C can raise fuel use on an urban commute by 12 to 28 per cent. Here’s more on winter maintenance for better mileage.
Tire Pressure, Air Conditioning and Idling
Small things add up:
- Tires under-inflated by 56 kPa (8 psi) can raise fuel consumption by up to 4 per cent, according to NRCan’s guide to factors that affect fuel efficiency.
- Air conditioning can increase consumption by up to 20 per cent.
- Ten minutes of idling burns 0.25 to 0.50 L of fuel.
- Winter gasoline carries 1.5 to 3 per cent less energy per litre than summer blends.

Running Costs: Your Annual Fuel Bill and the Hybrid Premium
This section covers fuel only. Other ownership costs, such as insurance, maintenance and depreciation, vary too much by driver for one reliable figure.
Annual Fuel Costs at August 2026 Pump Prices
Statistics Canada put regular self-serve gasoline at an average 173.8 cents a litre in August 2026. Here’s the math, using that price as an example, at the 20,000 km a year assumed in NRCan’s Fuel Consumption Guide.
| CR-V version | Combined rating | Litres a year | Fuel cost a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 to 2026 Hybrid AWD | 6.4 L/100 km | 1,280 | $2,225 |
| 2026 TrailSport Hybrid | 6.7 L/100 km | 1,340 | $2,329 |
| 2023 to 2026 Gas FWD | 7.8 L/100 km | 1,560 | $2,711 |
| 2023 to 2026 Gas AWD | 8.4 L/100 km | 1,680 | $2,920 |
Where you live matters. At Vancouver’s August 2026 average of 206.7 cents, the 2023 to 2026 hybrid saves about $827 a year over the gas AWD model. In Edmonton, at 160.3 cents in August 2026, the gap for the same 2023 to 2026 models shrinks to $641.
How Long the Hybrid Premium Takes to Pay Back
Honda Canada’s 2026 CR-V pricing lists the Sport at $43,375 and the Sport Hybrid at $45,900, MSRP before freight, PDI and taxes (accessed Oct. 2, 2026). That’s a $2,525 premium on the 2026 models, per Honda Canada’s May 2025 release. At $695 a year in fuel savings at August 2026 prices, break-even comes in about 3.6 years, or roughly 73,000 km.
Drive less, and payback stretches. Drive mostly in town, and it shortens.

Ways to Improve Efficiency in a CR-V Hybrid
The rating is a baseline. Your driving style decides the rest.
Driving Habits That Keep the Engine Off
NRCan says five techniques can cut fuel use by as much as 25 per cent:
- Accelerate gently, taking about five seconds to reach 20 km/h from a stop.
- Hold a steady speed, using cruise control on the highway; swinging between 75 and 85 km/h every 18 seconds can raise fuel use by 20 per cent.
- Anticipate traffic so you brake less.
- Avoid high speeds, since most vehicles are most efficient between 50 and 80 km/h.
- Coast to slow down, which in a hybrid also feeds the battery.
ECON Mode, Deceleration Paddles and Maintenance
Honda says ECON mode and Eco Assist help you make the most of every litre. Its spec sheet also lists steering-wheel deceleration paddle selectors on the CR-V Hybrid; use them to add regenerative braking before a stop. Keep up with oil changes and check tire pressure monthly once it gets cold.
