An all-new Opel Insignia station wagon looks to be on its way to North America as a variant of the next-generation Buick Regal dubbed TourX, which we expect will be marketed as a competitor for Audi's A4 Allroad and the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain and Volvo V90 XC.
Recently revealed ahead of its official debut at next month's Geneva auto show, the Insignia Sports Tourer should accompany its sedan sibling to North America to become the next-generation Regal. Reports from December 2015 that GM had trademarked the Regal TourX nameplate suggest it's likely the Insignia wagon will come here, but given North America's voracious appetite for crossovers, the TourX badge seems a good fit for a taller-riding Allroad-esque version bearing crossover styling cues.
According to AutoExpress, the new Insignia will ride on a longer wheelbase, which the Regal should inherit; that change will be good news for a car that tended toward the small side for North American tastes, and will help it better compete with those European-branded crossover-wagon hybrids.
In Europe, the Insignia is expected to comes with a choice of turbocharged gas and diesel four-cylinder engines, but our educated guess is the TourX will get a gasoline 2.0L turbo four good for around 250 hp, which would line the TourX up nicely against the Allroad and the V90 XC. Look for standard AWD under this slick wagon body, but don't hold out hope for a manual transmission.
While GM's Oshawa, Ontario plant cranks out the current Regal, production for the new car is shifting to Germany this year.
