The Toyota Avalon is a full-size sedan that bridges the gap between the brand's mainstream offerings and those of its upscale Lexus division. Though it wears a budget brand's name, the Avalon is a luxury sedan, coming loaded with niceties at an attractive price. It has always been reliable, only required minor repairs through the years of operation. Has a lot of miles but still run like a dream definitely buy as a first car or if on a budget.

On certain vehicles, a sensor for the occupant classification system (OCS) may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the sensor could short circuit and cause the airbag system to turn off the passenger-front airbag even when a passenger is seated.
Note: This problem would cause a warning message to display on the instrument panel and the airbag indicator light would display "passenger airbag off".
Safety Risk:
An airbag that is turned off could increase the risk of injury to a passenger in a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Toyota will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the OCS sensor.

This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships.
On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt.

Safety Risk:
Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire.
Corrective Actions:
Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

Certain vehicles may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 208 - Occupant Protection in Frontal Impacts and CMVSS 214 - Side Impact Protection. The airbag (SRS) control unit may incorrectly detect a fault in one or more of the front or side airbag impact sensors during vehicle start up. In the event of a crash where airbag deployment is required, this may result in the airbags not deploying as designed, increasing the risk of injury. Upon detection of a fault in the airbag system, multiple warning lights would activate, a warning buzzer would sound, and a warning message would display on the instrument panel display. Correction: Dealers will update the airbag control unit software. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2018-100. Vehicles repaired as part of the previous recall will require re-inspection and repair.

On certain vehicles, the electrical power cords of some dealer installed block heaters may have been improperly manufactured, causing the wires to contact each other, resulting in a short circuit. A short circuit could lead to a fire which would increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: For vehicles where the subject block heater was approved for installation, the dealer will replace the block heater assembly with a new one of an improved design. Under certain situations, the system may interpret a steel joint or plate in the roadway as an obstacle, and the system may apply the service brake automatically. On certain vehicles equipped with a trunk-mounted sub-woofer, cargo in the trunk could contact the sub-woofer's soft braided wire, which could cause the wire to move out of its normal position. If one of these wires were to come into contact with the metal frame of the sub-woofer, it could result in an intermittent short, causing the integrated circuit (IC) in the audio amplifier to become damaged. In some cases, the damaged IC could create a closed circuit between the power supply and sub-woofer, and electric current could continue to flow to the sub-woofer. If this were to occur, the sub-woofer could overheat, increasing the risk of fire, causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the audio system amplifier and install a protective cover around the subwoofer. In the interim, dealers will disconnect the rear sub-woofer.

Certain vehicles use brake fluids containing polymers that act as lubricants for certain brake system components. If during vehicle maintenance, brake fluid is used that does not contain such polymers or only small amounts, part of the internal rubber seal located at the end of the brake master cylinder piston may become dry and may curl during movement of the piston. If this occurs, a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp. If the brake warning light has illuminated and the vehicle continues to be operated without refilling the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir, the driver will begin to notice a spongy or soft brake pedal feel and braking performance may gradually decline. This will increase the stopping distance, increasing the likelihood of a crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the brake master cylinder seal with a newly designed one.

On certain vehicles, a minute crack may develop on the surface of the steering lock bar, which is a component of the steering interlock system. Such a crack may expand over a period of repeated lock and unlock operations, and eventually the lock bar could break. If this occurs, the interlock system may become difficult to unlock when stationary. If the vehicle is steered to the right while in motion with sufficient lateral acceleration, a broken and loose lock bar may move toward the steering shaft. If the engagement hole in the shaft happens to line up at the specific time the broken lock bar has moved, this could cause the steering wheel lock bar to engage, resulting in a sudden loss of steering control. Correction: Dealers will replace the steering interlock device.
