Introduced in 2019, the Volvo XC40 is the Swedish brand’s first-ever subcompact crossover model. Last year, Volvo added an all-electric version, which is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, fog lights are no longer standard across the range, though they are still available as an option; Volvo now includes wireless phone charging in mid- and top-level trims.
Volvo offers the XC40 in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trim levels. Power is from a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine that comes in T4 and T5 configurations offering different levels of performance. AWD and an eight-speed transmission are included in all trims.
Momentum trim comes with single-zone A/C, rear parking assist, 18-inch wheels, digital gauges, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, blind spot monitoring, power-folding side mirrors, lane keep assist, oncoming lane departure mitigation, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat with four-way lumbar.
R-Design adds dual-zone climate control, fog lights, navigation, front parking assist, 19-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, passive keyless entry, hands-free tailgate, a power front passenger seat, Nappa/Nubuck leather upholstery, front seat cushion extensions, and wireless smartphone charging.
Inscription trim brings wood interior trim plus various other interior and exterior cosmetic cues, a crystal gearshift lever, unique 18-inch wheels, and a stainless steel tailgate scuff plate.
In Momentum trim, you can add a panoramic roof as a standalone option.
In all trims, a climate package adds a heated steering wheel, heated windshield and headlight washer nozzles, and heated rear seats; and an advanced package adds 360-degree camera views, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and lane centering assist.
A Momentum premium pack brings front park assist, dual-zone A/C, navigation, wireless phone charging, fog lights, passive keyless, and a power front passenger seat.
Other standalone extras are a Harman Kardon stereo, and a performance-enhancing Polestar Engineered package.
Volvo’s fuel consumption estimates for the XC40 are 10.7/7.6 L/100 km (city/highway) for the T4, and 10.7/7.7 L/100 km with the T5 powertrain.
