The 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV starts at $27,998. That makes it the lowest price EV for sale in Canada. But with that low price comes a rather short 100 km range. Compare that to the Nissan Leaf which starts at $32,698 and gives 172 km, or the Chevrolet Spark which is $32,445 and has 131 km of range. The Mitsubishi has an AC motor making 66 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, which it routes through a single speed gearbox. The battery is a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery with a seven-hour charge time on a 240V plug. The i-MiEV was one of the first modern electric cars to market (beating the Nissan Leaf), but it hasn't changed much since then and the technology has moved on. Still, if you want a cheap and cheerful EV, especially for a city car, the price of entry of the I-MiEV is hard to beat. Based on a Japanese "kei-car" mini car platform, low-speed nip and tuck city driving is where this EV feels most at home.
The i-MiEV hums into 2016 with only one change, the addition of a navigation system with a 7.0-inch screen. That navigation system comes with an eight-speaker 400-watt stereo and rear-view camera. The navigation system is the only available option. The i-MiEV comes in just one trim, ES, and it includes 15-inch alloys, auto headlights, heated front seats, air conditioning, and a six-speaker stereo.
