One of the brand's most diverse model lines, Mercedes-Benz's E-Class moves into 2016 with minor changes.
Sedan and station wagon models get a revised Comand navigation system, and standard integrated USB media interface. The same changes come to the coupe and convertible, but these models also gain Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.
Sedan trim levels include the E250 BlueTec, E300, E400, E550 and E63 AMG. The wagon is offered in E400 and E63 trims. Meanwhile the coupe and convertible come as the E400 and E550. All sedan and wagon models get Benz's 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, but the E400 coupe is the only two-door version to get it; all other coupe and cabrios are rear-drive.
E250 BlueTec models use a 2.1L four-cylinder turbodiesel that makes 195 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The E300 gets a 3.5L V6 that makes 248 hp and 251 lb-ft, while the E400 uses a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 good for 329 hp and 354 lb-ft. The E550 packs a 4.7L twin-turbo V8 that cranks out 402 hp and 443 lb-ft, while the E63 S is motivated by a 5.5L twin-turbo V8 worth 577 hp and 590 lb-ft.
All models use seven-speed automatic transmissions.
Fuel consumption ratings vary widely. The E250's estimates are thriftiest, at 8.6/6.0 L/100 km (city/highway). The E 300 is rated 11.9.8.2 L/100 km, and the E400's figures are 12.0/8.5. The E550's ratings are 12.9/9.6, and the E63 S is thirstiest, at 15.3/10.8 L/100 km.
Standard kit in non-AMG sedan and wagon models includes electric power steering, eco start/stop, heated and power-folding side mirrors, navigation, 14-way power front seats and power steering column with memory, Nappa leather steering wheel, analog clock, ambient lighting, blind spot assist, attention assist, collision preventio assist, adaptive brake with hold function, pre-safe, and neck-pro.
Six-cylinder models get an upgraded suspension with selective damping, and V8 cars have an air suspension with active damping.
The E63 sedan and wagon get an AMG-tuned all-wheel drive system, three-setting ride control suspension, three-stage stability control, speed-sensitive sport steering, limited slip rear differential, upgraded engine cooling and brakes, active LED headlights, trunk lip spoiler, silver seatbelts (with black upholstery), sport steering wheel, AMG gauge cluster with race timer, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, and illuminated front door sills.
Prices range from $64,500 on the E250 BlueTec 4MATIC, to $116,300 for the E63 S wagon.
