Buying a used CX-5 in Canada
Know the generations
The first-generation CX-5 ran from 2013 to 2016. The second generation (2017 to 2025) was a big step up in refinement and added a 2.5L turbo from 2019. Canada also briefly got a 2.2L diesel in the 2019 Signature, dropped for 2020. The third generation arrived for 2026.
Check the known issues
On 2013 to 2016 models, test the infotainment for lag or crashes, and listen for harsh shifts. Some 2017 and 2018 models had a cold-start dashboard vibration that Mazda addressed with engine mount updates under a service bulletin. As with any vehicle driven on salted roads, check the underbody for corrosion.
Use the unlimited-km warranty
Because Mazda's coverage has no kilometre limit, a high-mileage CX-5 under five years old may still have powertrain coverage. Confirm the original in-service date.
