For 2007, the Chevrolet Corvette has several enhancements: crossed-drilled brake rotors are now included with the optional Magnetic Selective Ride Control; there are enhancements to the Bose audio systems, and wheel-mounted audio controls are included with Bose premium audio systems; the glovebox is larger; OnStar and an enhanced acoustic package are available on the Z06; two-tone modified seats with crossed flag embroidery and contrasting stitching are available; and there’s a new exterior Atomic Orange Metallic Tintcoat colour that replaces Daytona Sunset Orange Metallic.
The Corvette is available in three variations: a coupe and convertible, both with a 6.0-litre V8 with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shift; and the Z06 coupe, with 7.0-litre V8 mated strictly to a six-speed manual.
The coupe and convertible come in a single trim line, and include fog lights, Xenon headlights, power heated mirrors with driver’s side auto-dimming feature, 18- and 19-inch aluminum wheels with run-flat tires, variable intermittent wipers, automatic dual-zone air conditioning, cargo net, cruise control, garage door opener, keyless ignition with pushbutton start, head-up display (HUD), auto-dimming rearview mirror, driver’s position memory, power telescopic/manual tilt leather-wrapped wheel, perforated leather seats with six-way power driver adjuster, six-CD/MP3 stereo with seven speakers, and traction control. The coupe comes with a body-colour, one-piece removable roof panel, while the convertible comes with a standard power soft top.
The Z06 is a fixed-roof coupe and includes five-spoke painted aluminum wheels, a unique front fascia, three-inch dual exhaust, carbon fibre fenders and floor panels, dry sump engine oil system, coolers for oil, power steering, transmission and axle, rear-mounted battery, six-piston high-performance cross-drilled front brakes, four-piston rear brakes, and Z06 seat embroidery. High-intensity discharge lights, fog lamps, leather interior, dual-zone air conditioning, cabin air filtration and head-up display (HUD) with track mode and g-meter are also included.
Now in its 54th year, the Corvette is still considered one of the all-time legendary North American sports cars, and this sixth generation is possibly its finest hour. Despite its power and handling prowess, it’s extremely easy to drive, even the Z06, the fastest in the model’s history; unlike the brutal Viper, you can take the Z06 to the racetrack, and then easily wind your way through the commuter traffic on the way home.
Given the price, the Corvette’s interior is rather plain and plastic-heavy, and gaps on the dash panels could be a bit more exact, but the driving experience is exemplary. The Z06 will do zero to 100 km/h in under four seconds, and while it’s a lot of money on its own, it compares favourably to competitors from Germany and Italy costing twice as much, and may just be the best value for the performance that you can buy.
