BMW's mid-size crossover gains a plug-in hybrid model for 2016 called the xDrive40e. Combining a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, power output is 308 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, and a fully charged battery promises up to 21 km of all-electric driving.
That hybrid drivetrain joins a range of turbocharged engines carried over from 2015: a 3.0L six-cylinder in the xDrive35i that makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft; a 3.0L diesel cranking out 258 hp and 413 lb-ft; and a 4.4L V8 good for 445 hp and 479 lb-ft in the xDrive50i, and 567 hp and 553 lb-ft in the X5 M.
All four powertrains come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and, as the xDrive nomenclature suggests, standard all-wheel drive.
Fuel consumption figures in the 35i are 13.0/9.7 L/100 km (city/highway); 15.7/11.4 in the 50i; 16.6/12.1 in the X5 M; and 10.0/7.6 in the diesel. Like other plug-in vehicles, the xDrive40e gets two sets of ratings: 10.2/9.5 L/100 km when its gas engine and electric motor are working together, and the electricity equivalent of 4.1 L/100 km when running on its battery.
Pricing for non-M models begins at $66,300 for the xDrive35i, and tops out at $78,500 in 50i trim. The X5 M's MSRP is $106,900.
Standard kit in xDrive 35i and 35d models includes 19-inch wheels and tires, steerable Xenon automatic headlights, adaptive brake lights, fog lights, heated, auto-dimming, and power-folding side mirrors and windshield washer jets, front and rear park assist, backup camera, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated steering wheel and front seats, power-adjustable tilt-and-telescopic steering, power tailgate, 10-way power-adjustable front seats with driver memory, Dakota leather seat upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, nine-speaker stereo with USB and auxiliary inputs and CD player, and Bluetooth.
Extra stuff included in xDrive 50i trim includes soft-close doors, garage door opener, navigation, and voice control for navigation, telephone and stereo functions.
X5M trim adds 21-inch wheels, M sport seats, heated rear seats, 16-speaker 600-watt stereo.
