Volkswagen today announced pricing for the refreshed 2022 Jetta compact sedan, whose $22,595 base price marks a $1,000 jump over the outgoing 2021 model. The Jetta GLI sport sedan sees its price increase by $600, to $31,595.
The base Jetta gets the more significant update, adopting a 1.5L TSI turbo four-cylinder engine from the Taos subcompact crossover with 158 hp (up 11 from the old 1.4L) and 184 lb-ft of torque. Jetta GLI models stick with a familiar 2.0L turbo four-cylinder (228 hp/258 lb-ft).
All 2022 Volkswagen Jetta models come standard with a digital gauge cluster, and both Jetta TSI and GLI exteriors get new headlights, grille, bumpers and wheel designs.
New this year and bridging the gap between the Jetta TSI and the GLI is a Sport option package for the mid-range Jetta Comfortline, which brings an electronic locking differential, 17-inch dark graphite wheels, leatherette seats, and black trim elements.
Gone for 2022 is the Execline trim level; that leaves Highline as the top Jetta TSI option and the sole package that only comes with an automatic transmission. TSI Trendline and Comfortline start with a six-speed manual that options to the Highline’s eight-speed auto; the GLI also starts with a six-speed stick but the option there is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The Jetta is now Volkswagen's sole economy car offering in Canada; the Golf TSI hatchback was discontinued after 2021, leaving only that car's sporty GTI and Golf R variants.
Notably, Volkswagen’s pricing for the updated Jetta stays nearly $2,000 under that of the new-for-2022 Honda Civic, whose $24,465 starting tag is among the highest in the compact car segment.
Volkswagen says the revised 2022 Jetta will arrive at Canadian dealers in early 2022.
