What is a Fuel Cell Vehicle and Is It Right for Me

A fuel cell vehicle is an electric car that makes its own electricity from hydrogen instead of storing it in a big battery. Fuel cell fuel is compressed hydrogen gas, and the only thing out the tailpipe is water vapour.

For most Canadians, it isn't the right car yet. Canada has eight public hydrogen stations, six in British Columbia and two in Ontario, and just one model is sold to private buyers.

Key Takeaways

  • A fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) combines hydrogen with oxygen in a fuel cell stack to power an electric motor; Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) says FCEVs emit only water vapour and warm air.
  • The 2026 Toyota Mirai XLE is the only 2026 fuel cell car NRCan rates: 0.9 kg of hydrogen per 100 km combined (3.2 Le/100 km) and 647 km of range.
  • Transport Canada counts eight public hydrogen stations: six in B.C. and two in Ontario.
  • Toyota sells the Mirai only in B.C. and Quebec, and Hyundai offers the 2026 Nexo to fleets only.
  • Hydrogen retails at $16.50 per kg at HTEC's B.C. pumps, which works out to about $14.85 per 100 km in a Mirai.
  • Fuel cell vehicles qualify for up to $5,000 under the federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, but only at a final transaction value of $50,000 or less. The 2026 Mirai starts above that, at $54,330 MSRP.

Overview: What Is a Fuel Cell Vehicle and How Does Fuel Cell Fuel Work?

A fuel cell vehicle (FCV) is a type of electric vehicle. The difference is where the electricity comes from.

A battery EV stores grid power in a large lithium-ion battery. An FCEV carries hydrogen in high-pressure tanks and makes electricity on board. You refuel at a pump instead of plugging in.

How a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Makes Electricity

Inside the stack, hydrogen meets oxygen from the outside air:

  1. Hydrogen flows from carbon-fibre tanks to the fuel cell stack.
  2. At the anode, each hydrogen molecule splits into protons and electrons.
  3. The electrons travel through a circuit as an electric current and power the motor.
  4. Protons cross the electrolyte membrane and rejoin the electrons and oxygen at the cathode to form water.

A small battery pack stores energy from regenerative braking. In the Mirai, Toyota says a power control unit decides when to use the battery and when to draw from the stack.

NRCan says FCEVs are twice as efficient as combustion engines. How clean the whole trip is depends on how the hydrogen was made. Toyota notes that hydrogen made with renewable energy is carbon-free. Hydrogen made from natural gas carries the emissions from that process. HTEC says its B.C. stations currently sell green hydrogen made by electrolysis in Burnaby.

Key Considerations: Where a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Works in Canada

The car is the easy part. The fuel is the hard part.

Where You Can Fill Up With Hydrogen

Transport Canada's EV dashboard counts eight publicly available hydrogen stations as of March 31, 2026: six in British Columbia and two in Ontario. None are in Quebec, even though Toyota sells the Mirai there. Toyota Canada’s station map lists HTEC pumps in Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver, the University of British Columbia, Victoria and Kelowna, with a Tsawwassen station listed as coming soon.

Victoria and Kelowna each have a single pump on that map, so one station going offline means no local fuel.

Which Fuel Cell Cars You Can Get in 2026

Only one fuel cell car is sold to private buyers: the Toyota Mirai, at select dealers in British Columbia and Quebec, according to Toyota Canada. Our 2019 Toyota Mirai review covers the first generation.

The Hyundai Nexo returned for 2026 as a redesigned SUV with about 711 km of range and 201 hp, according to Hyundai Canada. It's limited production and sold to fleets only in Canada.

See how the redesigned Hyundai Nexo debuted. Our archive also tracks the road here, from Hyundai's next fuel cell SUV preview to the next-gen fuel cell vehicle it promised for 2018.

Costs: What a Hydrogen Car Costs to Buy and Fuel

Here's what fuel and incentives look like.

Fuel Cell Fuel Prices per Kilogram

Hydrogen is sold by the kilogram, not the litre. HTEC, which runs B.C.’s public stations, lists hydrogen at $16.50 per kg. NRCan’s fuel cell vehicle ratings put the 2026 Mirai at 0.9 kg/100 km combined. Multiply the two, and you get about $14.85 per 100 km.

Those are fuel costs only. NRCan's Le/100 km figure (3.2 for the Mirai) compares energy use to gasoline. Not price.

To compare with a battery EV, see what it really costs to charge an EV.

Purchase Price, Incentives and Resale

The 2026 Mirai XLE starts at $54,330 MSRP before fees and taxes, according to Toyota Canada. Resale is harder to judge. Used fuel cell cars rarely come up for sale, and buyers are limited to drivers who live near a station, which narrows the market when it’s time to sell.

The federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) opened on Feb. 16, 2026. Transport Canada’s EVAP rules give battery electric and fuel cell vehicles up to $5,000 in 2026, dropping to $2,000 by 2030. The final transaction value must be $50,000 or less unless the vehicle is made in Canada. That puts the Mirai over the line unless the negotiated price comes down by at least $4,330.

Practical Advice: Is a Fuel Cell Vehicle Right for Me?

For most drivers, no.

Who a Fuel Cell Car Can Suit

A fuel cell car can work if you live in B.C. near one of its public stations, can’t charge at home and want five-minute refuelling. Ontario has two stations but no dealers selling the Mirai, and Quebec has dealers but no public stations.

Signs a Battery EV or Hybrid Is the Better Choice

  • You live far from the B.C. and Ontario stations, or drive out of province often.
  • You can charge at home overnight.
  • You care about resale value and want a car that's easy to sell later.
  • You want federal incentives; many battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids sit under the $50,000 cap.

AutoTrader's own writers have asked whether it's too late for hydrogen vehicles. Fuel cell technology works; the infrastructure hasn't followed.
