With its longtime rivals cruising off into a sunset made hazier by vehicle emissions, the venerable Ford Mustang remains as the only car of its kind.
Not only is this the last muscle car on the market, but it’s still offered with a V8 engine in an era of increasing electrification. And if that just isn’t enough, the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse delivers 500 hp, making it the most powerful naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 to ever find its way between this pony car’s factory fenders.
Power: 10/10
While the Mustang GT offers 480 hp — or 486 hp with the optional active exhaust — the Dark Horse steps it up with a full 500 hp to go with 418 lb-ft of torque. This muscle car isn't just about power, though — it's about presence. Different drive mode and exhaust settings are enough to help the Dark Horse stand out to anyone within earshot.
Driving Feel: 8/10
Beyond its raw power, this Mustang delivers a sports car-like drive. This tester was equipped with an optional package of sticky Pirelli tires and adaptive suspension that helps it hug corners, with sharp, precise control that instills confidence whether at the track or on a winding road.
Beyond the well-tuned steering and suspension, the six-speed manual transmission enhances the drive experience entirely. The shifter itself is notchy yet forgiving, while the clutch provides clear and immediate feedback. (A 10-speed automatic is available, too.)
Comfort: 8/10
The optional Recaro seats are a highlight, although they go without heating and cooling settings. With its adaptive suspension and distinct drive modes, the Mustang Dark Horse can also feel track-ready or slightly more supple, depending on driver preference. It isn’t spine-jarring in normal mode, with each setting tuned to provide a different driving experience.
Styling: 10/10
The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse is a head-turner, especially in a finish like the Blue Ember metallic paint job seen here. This unique paint is hard to describe — it’s almost like dark blue with orange flecks that change depending on the angle and lighting.
Beyond the paint, the car delivers a special light show every time you lock or unlock it, adding a touch of drama to your daily routine. The car's aggressive stance is complemented by 19-inch painted aluminum wheels and a tasteful rear spoiler.
User-Friendliness: 9/10
Despite its performance pedigree, the Mustang Dark Horse doesn't skimp on technology. The tech suite includes a 12.4-inch digital instrument panel and a 13.2-inch touchscreen running Ford’s Sync 4 infotainment system. This updated layout is intuitive and easy to use, ensuring all the information you need is readily accessible without distracting from the drive experience.
Fuel Economy: 6/10
Remembering what this Mustang is, its 14.2 L/100 km combined fuel consumption rating is respectable. Also note that it likes an expensive diet of 93-octane gas. However, it's well worth the money for all the wonderful, quick, roaring, road-hugging fun it produces.
Value: 8/10
Starting at almost $75,000 before options, freight, and taxes, the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse is on the expensive side. This tester touched nearly $92,000 before tax, making it pricier than the top trims of the Toyota GR Supra and Nissan Z, its closest competitors in a market short of performance coupes. While it offers excellent performance and unique styling, its interior materials seem a little less down market from the price.
Safety: 8/10
Driver assistance features like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance are standard. The Mustang Dark Horse also has adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition.
Practicality: 7/10
With 382 L of trunk space, the Mustang Dark Horse has all the practicality a coupe like this could offer. The trunk easily accommodates golf bags or suitcases, while interior storage is adequate, with enough room for personal items and drinks.
Features: 8/10
Beyond the usual stuff — touchscreen infotainment, wireless smartphone connectivity, and a 12-speaker stereo — this particular Mustang is built with an emphasis on performance. Six-piston Brembo brakes up front, magnetorheological dampers, line lock and launch control, and engine, transmission, and differential oil coolers are just some of the standard highlights.
The Verdict
The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse is a remarkable blend of power, handling, and style. While it has some drawbacks in terms of price and interior fit and finish, it stands out as a top choice for those seeking an all-American sports car with track-ready capabilities. If you're looking for a car that delivers on both performance and presence, the Mustang Dark Horse is well worth considering.
