What is a Jeep Wrangler 4xe?
The Jeep Wrangler is available with four powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) called the 4xe (pronounced four-by-E).
Specifically, this hybrid powertrain has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, a battery pack located beneath the rear seat, and two electric motors. One of these motors is attached to the engine and one is in the transmission.
Whenever convenient, drivers can recharge their Wrangler 4xe by connecting it to a power outlet or charger. The battery recharges in a few hours, with a full charge storing enough electricity to power about 35 kilometres of driving without using any gasoline. The battery can also be recharged partially by the gas engine, which happens automatically as you drive around.
Plugging in this type of hybrid is never mandatory, but doing so will unlock increased efficiency. When the battery’s electric range is depleted, the gasoline engine engages automatically. Drivers only need to charge when convenient to do so, but as long as there’s gas in the tank, you’re good to drive.
With the Wrangler 4xe, many shoppers can handle their daily commuting and errands solely on electric power, reserving gasoline use for longer trips. It’s like driving an all-electric vehicle for shorter trips, and a gas-electric hybrid for longer ones.
With a pair of electric motors assisting its turbocharged gasoline engine, the 4xe engine develops 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The integrated electric motors can apply up to an additional 134 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque to the engine.
