Answering Your Most Popular Questions About the 2024 Jeep Wrangler

Adventure-seeking shoppers bought a cumulative 181,000 Jeep Wranglers in 2022, down from the 2021 figure of about 205,000 global sales.

For 2024, the Wrangler lineup gets a significant update. Whether you’re considering gas or hybrid power, two doors or four, or a hardcore Rubicon or something tamer, we’ve got the answers to your most popular questions about the 2024 Jeep Wrangler.

When are 2024 Jeep Wranglers coming out?

According to Stellantis, the 2024 Jeep Wrangler will be available in Sport, Willys, Sahara, High Altitude, Rubicon, and Rubicon 392 variants, which are expected to land at dealerships in the fall of 2023. The 2024 Jeep Wrangler is open for ordering now.

How much is a 2024 Jeep Wrangler?

Canadian pricing for the 2024 Jeep Wrangler has not been announced as of this writing, though the lineup starts at $31,895 USD for a two-door model and $35,895 for a four-door Unlimited. South of the border, the entry price for a 4xe-powered plug-in hybrid model is $49,995.

Why not buy a Jeep Wrangler?

The Jeep Wrangler has a long reputation as a go-to 4x4 for adventure-seeking shoppers who do a lot of driving over rough and muddy ground. With its truck-like construction, high ground clearance, and array of terrain-tackling 4x4 systems, it is a machine built for exploring.

Of course, there are a few reasons not to consider one.

Unlike most crossover SUV models that are built for on-road use and offer some off-road capability on the side, the Jeep Wrangler is purpose built as an off-roader first and foremost. With a focus on tough and rugged construction, ground clearance, and delivery of excellent off-road traction, its heavier frame, ride height, and more robust driveline parts mean that shoppers have many other SUV options that will be more fuel efficient and have better on-road manners for less money.

The Wrangler’s shape, tires, and body construction (complete with removable roof panels) result in elevated road and wind noise levels when driving at highway speeds. Also, the Wrangler’s popularity and unique collection of hardware and features help make it a pricey proposition, especially in its most capable versions, with the more fuel-efficient 4xe versions being pricier still.

While a 2024 Wrangler is hard to beat for a shopper looking for regular adventure, those after a lower up-front cost, lower fuel bills, and a more car-like drive and handling have better options.

What is a Jeep Wrangler 4xe?

The Jeep Wrangler is available with four powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) called the 4xe (pronounced four-by-E).

Specifically, this hybrid powertrain has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, a battery pack located beneath the rear seat, and two electric motors. One of these motors is attached to the engine and one is in the transmission.

Whenever convenient, drivers can recharge their Wrangler 4xe by connecting it to a power outlet or charger. The battery recharges in a few hours, with a full charge storing enough electricity to power about 35 kilometres of driving without using any gasoline. The battery can also be recharged partially by the gas engine, which happens automatically as you drive around.

Plugging in this type of hybrid is never mandatory, but doing so will unlock increased efficiency. When the battery’s electric range is depleted, the gasoline engine engages automatically. Drivers only need to charge when convenient to do so, but as long as there’s gas in the tank, you’re good to drive.

With the Wrangler 4xe, many shoppers can handle their daily commuting and errands solely on electric power, reserving gasoline use for longer trips. It’s like driving an all-electric vehicle for shorter trips, and a gas-electric hybrid for longer ones.

With a pair of electric motors assisting its turbocharged gasoline engine, the 4xe engine develops 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The integrated electric motors can apply up to an additional 134 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque to the engine. Total torque output represents a tie with the Wrangler’s available 6.4-litre V8 engine, despite official figures showing that the 4xe engine will use about $2,000 less fuel per year.

In 2022, one in four Wranglers sold had the 4xe powertrain and that figure is increasing.

What are the 2024 Jeep Wrangler changes?

The model-year 2024 update of the Jeep Wrangler has brought many changes compared to last year’s model. The Jeep Wrangler can now be fitted from the factory with a Warn Winch, for example, whose 8,000-pound capacity is useful in a variety of situations when off-roading in remote areas.

The signature seven-slot grille has been redesigned for 2024 and 10 new wheel designs are available. The antenna is now “trail ready” and integrated into the windshield, where it won’t catch on passing branches.

On board, look for an all-new instrument panel and 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system boasts five times the operating speed of its predecessor and is now capable of over the air (OTA) updates.

The 2024 Wrangler Willys gets more standard equipment, including the Tru-Lok rear locking differential, which mechanically binds the rear axle together to boost traction in slippery situations. Steel rock rails are standard as well, and the standard tire size grows an inch to 33 inches.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon runs a next-generation Dana 44 HD full-float rear axle. It features a new design with a wheel hub assembly separated from the axle shaft. This allows the axle tube (rather than the shaft itself) to support the vehicle’s weight. Benefits include higher towing capacity and better handling of larger wheel and tire sizes.

How big is a Jeep Wrangler?

The Jeep Wrangler comes in two sizes, a two-door Sport model and a four-door Wrangler Unlimited.

The smaller Wrangler Sport measures 166.8 inches long, 73.6 inches tall, and 73.9 inches wide (without mirrors). This makes it 2.0 inches narrower than a two-door Ford Bronco and 6.9 inches shorter. The overall height between these two models is separated by less than half an inch.

The four-door Wrangler Unlimited is a stretch-wheelbase version of the two-door Wrangler, coming in at 21.6 inches longer or 188.4 inches in total. Other physical dimensions remain the same. Compared to the four-door Bronco, the Wrangler Unlimited is 1.0 inch shorter and 2.0 inches narrower.

Compared to a Wrangler Unlimited, the Toyota 4Runner is less than 2.0 inches longer, about 1.5 inches wider, and about 2.0 inches lower. Next to a Grand Cherokee, the 2024 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is 3.6 inches narrower, 2.8 inches taller, and 5.1 inches shorter.

Can you tow with a Jeep Wrangler?

For 2024, the Jeep Wrangler’s towing capacity has been increased to a maximum of 5,000 pounds on selected models like the Wrangler Rubicon. That’s an increase of 1,500 pounds versus earlier models, enabled in part by the use of the newly available full-float Dana rear axle.

Many 2024 Jeep Wrangler models have a maximum tow rating of 3,500 pounds, however.

Is it legal to drive my Wrangler without doors in Canada?

Yes, as long as at least one mirror is available to the driver (for instance, the rearview mirror). The Ford Bronco has removable doors as well.

What engines come in the 2024 Jeep Wrangler?

Shoppers can choose between one of four engines for their 2024 Jeep Wrangler.

The first is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This new four-cylinder engine is part of the next-generation family of “Hurricane” engines launched by Stellantis.

In 4xe models, this turbocharged four-cylinder engine is joined by a built-in battery and pair of electric motors, reducing fuel consumption, and increasing power output to 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

A 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque remains available and is one of the most mass-produced and proven V6 engines on the market.

A 6.4-litre, high-performance V8 engine with 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque is available in the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 392 Rubicon.

All models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, though select models with the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 can be ordered with a six-speed manual.

Where is the Jeep Wrangler built?

Final assembly of the Jeep Wrangler occurs at the brand’s Toledo, Ohio, complex.

For the North American market, the 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline engine is built in Kokomo, Indiana. The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine used in the Wrangler is built in various locations including Dundee, Michigan, Trenton, Missouri, and Coahuila, Mexico. The 6.4-litre HEMI V8 is built at the Saltillo Engine Plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.

What is a Jeep Wrangler Power Box?

The Wrangler’s new-for-2024 Power Box feature is available on 4xe models, where it repurposes the vehicle’s built-in generator and battery pack to provide owners with four 120-volt power outlets totalling 30 amps of power. With the Power Box, the Wrangler 4xe’s built-in hybrid battery can be used as a power bank that can provide electricity for campsite lighting, jobsite tools, and mobile recharging of electronics.

Which 2024 Jeep Wranglers have a locking axle? (LSD)

On the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, an open front axle is standard, while the 4xe Rubicon gets a Tru-Lok electronic locking front axle. When it comes to the rear axle, an open axle is standard on Sahara and Sport S 4xe models, with the Trac-Lok anti-spin axle fitted to High Altitude 4xe models for added capability. The Tru-Lok electronic locking axle is fitted to the Wrangler Willys and Wrangler Rubicon 4xe models as standard, with the Rubicon offering the Dana 44 HD Full Float axle.

Standard Wrangler models get an open front differential as standard, while the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon gets a Tru-Lock electronic locking front axle. Between the rear wheels, Sport and Sahara grades get an open differential, with the Tru-Lok electronic locking axle and Dana 44 HD Full Float equipped on Rubicon models.
