2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD Gets New Cabin, More Diesel Power

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD gains a new face and new interiors like its light-duty sibling, but the heavy-duty work trucks get more power and torque from the diesel engine, a new automatic transmission for the gas engine, and some serious towing upgrades.

The fresh nose includes a new fascia on all trims, as well as new headlights and a new grille. Uplevel trims like the LTZ, High Country, and (for the first time on the HD) ZR2 get fancier headlights and their own accents.

Inside, the dashboard is just like the light-duty truck, with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with a Google-based interface. The lowest-spec trucks, the WT and Custom, keep the old tech layout, leaving it only on uplevel models. Wireless phone charging is added, and there is real wood in the cabin. Chevrolet uses more premium leather on various interior surfaces as well.

The 6.6L gas V8 doesn't change for 2024, but it does get a 10-speed automatic transmission like the diesel instead of a six-speed. The extra gears should make the 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque available more of the time and improve fuel economy. Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (GCVWR), the total of truck, payload, and trailer, increases 2,000 lbs to 26,000 on the gas trucks.

Diesel buyers get 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque from the 6.6L Duramax V8 turbodiesel, up from 445 and 910. Chevrolet doesn't go into the upgrades but said that the engine will deliver "more efficient combustion," which accounts for the increased performance. Even more useful for buyers of these big pickups, low-end torque is up 25 per cent.

Trailer tech upgrades include adaptive cruise control with the ability to account for the extra weight and drag (and braking distances) that come with a trailer. The Transparent Trailer camera view system can now work with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer, and the blind zone warning zones have been extended to account for a trailer. GCW Alert, which warns you if your vehicle and trailer are approaching the truck's CVWR is also new, though there were no details about the feature.

We mentioned up top that the ZR2, Chevrolet's hardcore off-road trim, would be added to the Silverado HD for the first time this year. We don't have any more details, though, as Chevrolet will reveal more in the coming months.

Production of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and Silverado 3500HD starts in the first half of next year. Expect more details and pricing for the truck, which will be built at GM's Oshawa Assembly facility (and plants in Michigan), closer to the on-sale date.
