2013 Jaguar XF

by Gabriel on 02-14-2013
Good Ride
If you live in Southern California or south Florida, Jaguar’s two best markets, an all-wheel-drive Jag is as useless as a chocolate teapot. But if you live in the Northeast, another hot zone for luxury nameplates, almost all of which make good money on AWD, it’s a different matter. Jaguar needs this all-weather option, and the price-leading XF and the flagship XJ get it for an extra $3000 and $3500, respectively. It comes in both cars, teamed exclusively with the new supercharged and direct-injected 3.0-liter V-6 that pulls 340 horsepower.

Neither the steel-bodied XF nor the aluminum XJ was originally designed for this electronic wet-clutch front-drive system, which echoes BMW’s xDrive. A short propshaft angles slightly left from the transfer case behind the eight-speed automatic to an open differential on the side of the engine’s sump. The right wheel’s halfshaft passes through the sump so that the engine stays low. The gear adds 154 pounds and, on dry surfaces, can shift half the torque forward.

2001 Daewoo Nubira

by Gabriel on 02-11-2013
Good Car

Although Daewoo has one of the worst reputations in the car industry, this expectation has been proven wrong by our surviving Nubira. After 305,000 kilometers in just 7 years this car is still going strong.

Rarely is any maintenance needed. No oil or water checks for this 'newer' car.

Quite quick for what it is, our 16V 2.0L does the 0-100Km in 10 seconds, faster than our Impreza RS! Has no trouble getting to 180km/hr. The sedan is quite lighter then the station wagon that we own, and I can only imagine it would be even faster.

Not super fuel efficient for a 2.0L, about 10L/100km. Still better than most cars out there. When it was first purchased we were getting 800km out of the tank.

Lots of space and storage makes this car amazingly useful and perfect for a family with drivers who want some fun too. However the inside really lets the car down with classic 'Korean' looks. Seats are a little hard.

Handling isn't all that amazing as you would expect, however I believe the sedan is much more impressive as speeding round a corner can lead to the heavy back end of our station wagon losing grip.

Overall this car has proved to be a brilliant purchase, and since buying it new we have only been pleasantly surprised by its quality.

2013 Honda Accord

by Gabriel on 02-09-2013
Honda is terrific
There were low points in the past few years when we doubted Honda, but Big H might be on its way back. The new, ninth-generation Accord is a convincing reminder of the company’s core values and—considering all Honda has been through, including an earthquake that smashed its Tochigi R&D center and floods in Thailand that crimped production—a triumphant return to form.

This latest Accord is 3.5 inches shorter bumper to bumper and 0.9 inch tighter at the wheelbase than its fleshy predecessor. Yet once again, Honda conducts a master class in packaging. Against its porcine predecessor, the 2013 car’s cabin dimensions vary hardly at all. The Accord still feels like one of the biggest cars in the segment, with two roomy and extra-comfortable front buckets and a back bench you and two friends can stretch out on. Moreover, the capacious trunk is even larger, maximum volume having increased by over one cubic foot.

2010 Honda Civic

by Gabriel on 02-07-2013
Civic Nationnal
Although the car’s styling isn’t likely to set many hearts racing, it is distinctive. Compared to a Corolla, Elantra, or just about any other small jelly bubble of Far Eastern origin, the current Civic manages to stand apart. It’s chiselled lines are rather handsome by modern standards – the front fascia is quite aggressive, while the cab forward greenhouse lends the car a low drag, aerodynamic look – think original Dodge Intrepid, downsized and updated. Overlapping windshield wipers and small windows in the A-pillars are neat touches. Fit and finish is somewhat better than many small cars currently on sale in North America. Panel gaps are decently linear, exterior trim looks and feels fairly solid, plus compared to some low and mid-priced cars we’ve driven of late, paint finish is also good – we barely noticed any signs of orange peel, even on the front and rear fascias.

Inside, to a certain extent, form follows function. Although some recent Honda seats (and Acura seats come to think of it), have proved to be rather uncomfortable, the Civic sedan’s front perches are fairly nicely bolstered – able to accommodate a wide variety of different sized and shaped souls, with good rake adjustment and more than adequate lumbar support.
