Ford's diesel F-150 is coming this spring. It brings big fuel economy numbers, and more of just about everything than the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.
The diesel 2018 F-150 uses a 3.0L Power Stroke V6. It's the sixth engine in the F-150 lineup, and it offers 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. That's 10 hp and 20 lb-ft more than Ram offers in its 1500 EcoDiesel truck.
Official Canadian fuel economy estimates aren't available yet, but the US EPA estimate is 30 mpg highway. That's 3 mpg better than Ram 1500 diesel and about 7.8 L/100 km.
The engine is designed by the same team that engineers the 6.7L diesel for the big trucks. It uses a compacted-graphite iron block for strength. There is a variable-geometry turbo to improve power and responsiveness.
Backing up the diesel is Ford's 10-speed automatic transmission. The diesel will also have start-stop to save more fuel.
Maximum payload for the F-150 diesel is 918 kg and max towing is 5,182 kg. Those numbers are meaningfully better than the Ram diesel's 745 kg and 4,222 kg capacities.
Those tow numbers are slightly lower than the big numbers Ford offers with 5.0L and 3.5L EcoBoost gas trucks, but those high numbers are for lighter, base trim regular cab trucks. Those trucks also offer more power (and the EcoBoost offers slightly more torque) but they can't match the effortless low-end grunt of a diesel.
The F-150 diesel will be available on Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trim trucks with the SuperCrew cab and 5.5 or 6.5-foot box lengths with two or four-wheel drive. Orders open later this month with deliveries starting in the spring.
