Aston Martin will be the first Bond car maker to build an actual submarine. The company announced today that they are working with sub maker Triton to make a special luxury edition submersible.
No, this one won't try to be a car as well. It's strictly an underwater affair. The project, code-named Project Neptune, adds Aston styling and luxury craftsmanship to Triton's undersea engineering know-how.
Triton builds submersibles for researchers and deep sea divers, but they also make submersibles for superyacht owners to explore the ocean. The company calls itself the "most experienced civil submarine and submersible manufacturer in the world."
Triton has a range of submersibles, but Project Neptune is based on the company's Low Profile (LP) three-person submarine platform. The sub is transformed with new styling from Aston's designers. Aston Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman said that the sub has "forms and proportions that express the same devotion to design, engineering and beauty that shape our cars." The LP is already marketed as a luxury submersible, but the Aston Martin partnership is likely to up the comfort level inside as well as the style outside.
The announcement didn't come with specifications like depth or range, but the LP that the limited-edition sub is based on can take three people 500 metres down and has up to 12 hours of endurance. It weighs 4,000 kg and can travel at a blazing 5.6 km/h. That speed comes from four 5 hp thrusters and a 30 kWh battery.
