The overhauled 2023 Kia Sportage is set to arrive in Canadian dealers this spring. The compact crossover's price will jump $2,000 from the outgoing model, with an MSRP starting from just over $28,000 (not including destination fees). Hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models will arrive later in the year, giving the new Sportage a huge range of powertrain options.
Longer and wider than before, Kia says that the new Sportage will offer more headroom and legroom for rear passengers as well as a large increase in cargo space. The Kia 2023 Sportage gets sharper styling including a new iteration of the brand's Tiger Nose grille and boomerang daytime running lights that will be tough to miss.
A 2.5L four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic transmission will be the base powertrain, offering 187 hp, front or all-wheel drive, and an estimated 8.4 L/100 km combined with front-wheel drive and 9.5 with AWD. A 1.6L hybrid driveline with a combined 227 hp is available with standard AWD, but fuel economy estimates weren't available. Lastly, a 1.6L-powered plug-in hybrid option will come with 90 hp from the motor and 261 hp total. Kia didn't offer a Canadian range estimate for the 13.8 kWh battery, but it has a 70-km range estimate on the generous European testing cycle.
On-board tech includes a 12.3-inch screen with navigation as well as the ability to connect to multiple phones at once and an available surround-view camera. Through the Kia Connect app, users will be able to get a view from those cameras on their phone to help find the Sportage in a busy parking lot. The app will also give last-mile nav directions from your parking spot to your destination.
Driver aids include forward collision avoidance, driver attention warning, lane follow assist, and rear occupant alert. Smart cruise control is available, as are rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, parking collision avoidance, safe exit assist, blind view monitor, and Highway Driving Assist.
