Volkswagen Canada is holding the line on MSRP for its all-new 2018 Tiguan crossover after Automotive News reported the VW's US arm announced a price cut this week aimed at boosting sales in that country.
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan was redesigned into a larger vehicle with three rows of seating in a bid to attract buyers turned off by the old model's relatively small interior.
American buyers will enjoy Tiguan prices cut by US$600 to US$2,180, depending on trim. That top discount applies to the U.S.-market SE model, which now goes for US$27,650. New prices for S, SEL and SEL Premium models are now US$25,495, US$31,990 and US$37,150 respectively, with front-wheel drive.
The US Tiguan range differs from Canada's in that all American versions are offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive, while in Canada only the entry-level Trendline can be had with FWD. Here, Tiguan pricing ranges from $28,925 to $39,175.
In Canada, active safety features like adaptive cruise, blind spot detection with lane assist, automatic high beams and a 360-degree backup camera are bundled in a $1,470 driver assistance package, while most of those items are included in the SEL Premium model sold stateside.
Volkswagen Canada said not to expect any Tiguan price reductions, at least not in the short term.
"Pricing in Canada for the all-new Tiguan will remain consistent for the full model year," said media spokesperson Thomas Tetzlaff. "Pricing policy in the two countries is fully and completely independent."
The compact crossover segment is a busy one, but direct competitors for the new Tiguan -- those that offer three-row seating -- are limited to the 2018 Nissan Rogue, 2018 Dodge Journey and 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander.
