In its most recent generation, the Volkswagen Tiguan transformed into a larger model than before, moving from the small end of the segment to the large side. It gained an available third row of seats, assembly moved to Tennessee, and sales took off.
For 2021, Volkswagen added a United Edition trim that slots between Comfortline and Highline.
Volkswagen offers the Tiguan in four trim levels, all with the same 184 hp 2.0L turbo-four and an eight-speed automatic. Trendline offers front or all-wheel drive, while Comfortline, United, and Highline are all AWD only.
Trendline offers a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. 17-inch alloy wheels are standard as are automatic headlights with LED running and tail lights. Heated washer nozzles are also included. The front seats offer heating and manual adjustment, there is manual climate control with AC, illuminated visor mirrors, LED reading lights, and standard safety kit includes blind spot monitoring.
Comfortline adds an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless versions of the phone integration and adds autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian monitoring to the safety systems as well as proximity key entry, power tailgate, and eight-way power adjust driver seat.
United adds Volkswagen digital dashboard, panoramic sunroof, interior ambient lighting, and a leather-wrapped wheel.
Highline adds 18-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian monitoring, park distance control Fender audio, and a heated steering wheel.
The third row of seats is an option on Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline. Highline also offers an R-Line package with black interior trim and unique bodywork.
Front-drive Volkswagen Tiguan models offer an estimated 10.4 L/100 km city, 8.1 highway with 11.0/8.6 for AWD models.
The Tiguan competes in one of the busiest segments in the industry, with two-row models like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Chevrolet Equinox, Subaru Forester, GMC Terrain, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape and three-row models like the Nissan Rogue, and Mitsubishi Outlander.
