History/Overview
Since 2011, Mini has catered to the upscale subcompact crossover crowd with the Cooper Countryman – the least-mini vehicle the brand has ever offered. The current second-generation Countryman arrived as a 2017 model.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, the Mini Cooper Countryman is unchanged following a styling refresh last year.
Available Trims
Mini offers the Cooper Countryman in base, S, JCW, and SE trim levels. Base models are powered by a 1.5L turbo three-cylinder engine; Cooper S and JCW upgrade to a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder, with the JCW getting about 60 per cent more power; and the plug-in hybrid Cooper SE Countryman pairs the three-cylinder with an electric motor and a battery that can provide some all-electric driving range. All-wheel drive is standard across the board; gas models use an eight-speed transmission, while the SE gets a six-speed automatic.
Standard Features
The Cooper Countryman and Cooper S Countryman start in a Premier configuration that comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, leatherette upholstery, LED headlights, an 8.8-inch touchscreen, a panoramic sunroof, digital gauges, heated front seats, auto-dimming mirror, a power tailgate, passive keyless entry, power seats, and navigation.
Driver assistance features include forward collision alert, lane departure warning, speed limit info, and automatic high beams.
A Premier Plus package (optional on Cooper and Cooper S and standard in JCW) adds a head-up display, wireless phone charging, upgraded navigation and audio, a Nappa steering wheel, and sport seats.
The plug-in Cooper SE Countryman starts in a Classic configuration, with 18-inch wheels, leatherette seating, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic roof. The Premier Plus option is available here, too.
Fuel Economy
Mini’s fuel consumption estimates are 10.2/7.7 L/100 km (city/highway) for the base three-cylinder engine; 10.4/7.5 L/100 km and 10.4/7.7 L/100 km for Cooper S and JCW models, respectively; and the PHEV Cooper SE Countryman is rated for 8.1/7.9 L/100 km (city/highway) when running as a gas-electric hybrid and 3.2 Le/100 km when using its 29 km of EV range.
Competition
The Mini Countryman competes against the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Volvo XC40, Lexus UX, and BMW X2.
