History/Overview
Mercedes-Benz introduced the CLA-Class in 2014. While it is ostensibly a subcompact sedan, Benz calls it a four-door coupe owing to its sporty roofline.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, Mercedes-Benz has redesigned the CLA-Class into its second generation. The new car gains standard AWD across the line, and a new AMG CLA 35 variant to slot between the base CLA 250 and top-end AMG CLA 45.
Available Trims
CLA 250, AMG CLA 35 and AMG CLA 45 all use a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that boasts more power output as you move up the ladder. The first two use a seven-speed transmission, and the CLA 45 gets an eight-speed. All three come with Benz's 4Matic AWD.
Standard Features
CLA 250 exterior features include perforated front brakes with painted calipers, comfort suspension, 18-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights/taillights/daytime running lights, and remote engine start.
Inside, there's a leather-trimmed steering wheel, heated sport front seats with power adjustments, a six-speaker stereo, Artico upholstery, tilt-and-telescopic steering, push-button engine start, heated side mirrors, automatic climate control, cruise control, illuminated entry, 7.0-inch gauge cluster and infotainment displays with a touchpad controller, the MBUX infotainment system, four USB-C ports, and Bluetooth.
Among the CLA 250's standard safety features are attention assist, tire pressure loss warning, and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic braking.
The AMG CLA 35 and CLA 45 add performance-tuned versions of the 4Matic AWD system, sportier suspension tunings, ambient interior lighting, sport+ and race drive modes.
Key Options
CLA-Class options include an intelligent drive package with active cruise control, steering assist, lane change and lane keeping assist, traffic sign assist, and active blind spot assist.
Active park assist, a hands-free trunk, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration are available, too.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, Mercedes-Benz had not published fuel consumption estimates for the 2020 CLA-Class. In 2019, the CLA 250 was rated at 9.9/7.3 L/100 km (city/highway), and the AMG CLA 45's estimates were 10.3/7.9 L/100 km. We expect the 2020 model's ratings to be similar, and the new AMG CLA 35's estimates will probably nearly match those of the CLA 45.
Competition
Mercedes's competition for the CLA-Class include the Audi A3 and S3, the Acura ILX, BMW's 2 Series, and, at a stretch, the Subaru WRX.
